Deer: I'm done with this crap!"
View attachment 637841

I always feel a sense of awe for the wild animals that survive here year round.

Our deer numbers are recovering but 4 and 3 winters ago were brutal and long, waist deep snow, and proper cold stretches where from the second half of December right through the end of February it was below -20 more often than not with no breaks really.

That's hard on them. Had a ton of winter kill, especially the fawns 😢. Doesn't help being overrun with coyotes and now more and more wolves too that can just walk on top of the snow and help themselves to the poor deer that can't.

Hats off to all of you that deal with extreme cold. I'm on the west end of Phoenix where we pray for rain. La Nina is killing us with no summer rains and a dry winter. Our weather is basically dirt blowing around.
I will need wellness checks by you during the summer!
60 days of 110° plus is my punishment for balmy winters here. My a/c unit has a blown Hemi for power.

That's my biggest fear.
My wife laughs at me because I'm more afraid of hard a freeze that anything else!
Being a farmer, there's lots of engines, water tanks, pumps and pipes to winterize and I'm always thinking I forgot something!!

We shall know in 24 hours when things finally begin to thaw!

Good Luck…..I really wish you the best! Burst pipes in the house really suck!

My son also had a little bit of bad luck with freezing a couple years ago. He thought that he had prepared pretty good…..insulated the pipes in the attic…..but missed seeing the little 1/4" line going to the refrigerator. It froze, then burst while he and his wife were at work. It's amazing how much water can come from a 1/4" line, when leaking for a while! memtb

My power went out a few years ago and all my exposed pool pipes froze and cracked.
Hopefully you get back up and running soon.
It was a chinese fire drill. I have a portable with a manual transfer switch wired to the panel. It will run everything but the oven and ac. I got it running then tripped one leg of the genny. Had to much running. Normally I turn off the 110's and turn them on one at a time. Took me a while to figure out what happened. Literally jumped of bed with the power out and 9 degrees outside. Finally got it all going and the power came back on lol.

We're usually single digits but it's going to hit 40 today. Everything is a sheet of ice, drove from homer to anchorage Monday, it felt like late March/early April. Kinda wild to talk to friends and family down south in January and have the normal temps flipped....

Doesn't take much of an water flow rate to keep pipes from freezing. Our old house had summer time insulation ( had been designed as a summer worker house with no intention for winter residence) even a small flow would keep the pipes unfrozen.

It has been brutal here in central Texas. I had 1" of snow and didn't get above 35 yesterday. Today is supposed to be better with the high in the 50's. Not sure how many more days of this we can take....and I will be complaining this summer when it is 110+ just as much. Equal opportunity hater here...

I hope you guys all make out good. It is really tough to get through when no one including the cities, fire and EMS, have the right gear. Homes also aren't built for this kind of cold. Wishing you guys a quick and safe resolution.
