Truck gun

Pretty illegal to actually shoot from a vehicle here unless you're licensed handicapped, so no idea about shooting A and B pillars. But.....ahahahhaha, there was a fella, back when I was growing up, that went out target shooting and decided his hood made a good rest. Shot through the hood and opposite fender of his pick-up. He learned his lesson though. The next weekend, he decided standing in the bed was better. Shot clean through his roof and front windshield. Ughhh, it takes all kinds.

Was there a squirrel on the hood ? Wow

If you have any $100 SKS for sale let me know, I am more than interested!
That is what it cost when I bought it. Current prices are not rooted in reality.

I was going to do that years ago, but never got around to it.

If I remember correctly, the 700 and Model 7 should be the same barrel threads. I would verify though, before dropping any money. You're barrel will have to have the tennon cut back nearly all the way to the case neck, because the CM is based on the .308 Win, and the Grendel is based on the .220 Russian (smaller diameter than the .308/CM).

You will need to start with a .223 action, and have the magazine box feed lips custom trimmed for the odd-sized Grendel width. And the bolt face opened to the odd-sized diameter. Other than that, straight-forward build from there.

Unless you can find a REALLY hard to find rifle, then you will have a platform that is nearly perfect from the get-go... Remington used to build the 5R milspec rifles chambered in 6.8 SPC. If you can find one those, that would be ultimate platform to start your build.
Set on a Rem action?

I just don't trust the barrels on those Howa actions...Personal opinion. Plus, stock options are slim compared to a 700. I once (many many years ago) had a brand new Howa 1500 Lightning heavy barreled .223 Remington, and the bolt was so loose, it would almost pop out of the action when you wiggled the bolt while it was open. I ended up trading the rifle towards something else, and never even shot it.

Definitely understand your trepidation based on your previous results, but whatever they are doing with those barreled actions seems to get some pretty high praise (grendel being the one i speak of). Hunting partner built one up also and cant say enough on how much he loves it. Enough that i kinda want one despite no good reason that any logic could support.

That's good to hear they've stepped-up their game. Based on my prior experiences, I would be fairly leery of buying Howa, but that's only based on my own personal experiences.

I would probably get that new Ruger American Predator in 6.5 Grendel with the 22" threaded barrel, that uses AR mags.

Can't speak to the 6.5 Grendel chambering, but I can speak to the 7.62X39 chambering in their LW contour. In a hollowed out Boyd's stock it weighs a bit over 6 lbs with Talley AL rings and a Leupold LW 2-7x. The only time that I've shot it, it hit a 2" x 2" target slightly uphill and just short of 100 yds offhand and at-will. At least the first two shots. Third shot moved off target due to poor fit in the Boyd's stock, once it cooled off the next two were again spot-on target. This is currently being fixed with AL pillars and is soon to have Devcon AL putty bedding.
Had a parkerized S&W 1500 Varminter in .223 years ago. Was the basis for my willingness to try this version. Wish that I still had that S&W 1500.

I don't know how you guys keep from shooting the A or B pillars and or the mirror using those short rifle barrels. I learned the hard way you don't shoot a .357 magnum out the off side window leaning one's shoulder against the steering wheel to steady himself. At least not without ear muffs.. Couldn't hear for a day after that. Typically carry a 788 6 mm Remington in the truck or jeep as well as marlin lever action .22LR.

That's actually really easy to prevent, don't carry a loaded rifle in a vehicle and never shoot any gun from inside a vehicle. Both of those actions are illegal here in WA and probably most other states as well. I don't think anyone was stating that they actually carry the weapons LOADED in the vehicle.

I want to build on a Remington action because I like them. I also have a barrel that I want to use. It's a 1in8 #4 Kreiger barrel that's threaded for a Remington 700 ramage style setup. Its chambered in 6.5 creed right now, but I was tossing the idea around of rechambering to a 6.5 grendel. It's just an idea in the very early stages. If I build one, it will be built with an eye toward precision accuracy. I'm not interested in a Howa action, or a ruger . I already built an AR15 in 6.5 grendel with a lilja 740 1 in 8, 3 groove that shoots great. Just thinking along the lines of a tack driving compact bolt gun with a high quality barrel that gives more potential for squeezing every drop of accuracy out of the little round .

It's a good idea, but you'll need a new bolt too. A 6.5 BR would be the easiest swap and offer a meaningful step up in performance over the Grendel.

Actually went the last three years of schooling at Washington State in Pullman. Used to hunt chucker in the breaks of the Snake river before class some days.

By the same token, anyone that grew up on a ranch in Montana, Idaho or Wyoming grew up with rifles of one type or discription in their jeep or truck. Be they sitting in a sheep skin line box behind the windshield or in a rack infront of the back window with a pistol in the glove box or strapped to the steering wheel. And to say a ranch vehicle was never shot out of... with respect to varmits be they coyotes, cougar etc would be a lie. I don't think that game was ever shot out them, but I can't speak for others and I am sure we all knew the rules; but we also knew practical too. They may or may not have been loaded but it never took long to throw a few shells in. Unless you grew up this way, I am sure many would not understand.

There may have been one or more run ins with armed poachers on your land or tresspassers, fence or gate cutters of one variety or another.

You knew the game wardens and sheriff on a first name basis in a good way and neither one of them was going to question if you had an unloaded or loaded weapon.. just saying.. unless you are the last ranch up the valley and lived in ones shoes..

Just thinking, maybe a truck gun means different things to each of us.
