Too much gun?

I often take my 375 cheytac antelope hunting, so I guess "there's no such thing as too much gun" for me.
It's like a girl too pretty with too much class, being too lucky, a car too fast, no matter what they say I've done, I ain't never had too much gun!!

I can say a 338LM with 300gr ABs is not too much gun for any North American big game animal. Small TX whitetails, WY pronghorn and up.

A buddy once shot a mountain grouse with a .30 carbine at 50 feet. There was enough left for lunch but it put a mighty big chasm in it. We were deer hunting not bird hunting but it was getting about lunch time I guess it looked tasty.

As far as what's too much? I hear of guys going to 5th world slopholes and paying modest numbers of greenbacks to more or less shoot artillery like 105mm recoil-less rifles RPG's occasionally at extremely large ruminating herbivores that happen to be in the area. I cannot confirm this but I think that that would officially meet my threshold for too much gun. Of course that logic does not apply to varmints. In that case, since we're not usually intent on eating them, I feel like it's my duty to at least spread the remains around the landscape as thoroughly as possible in order to complete the circle of life.

The saying too much gun is merely one persons opinion. Too much gun for most is not enough for others and vice versa. There's no winner and there's no loser. When I hear someone at the range giving me a hard time about my 375's. I ask if they want to shoot them. I get 2 reactions...
Some shoot them and see that it's a comfortable and accurate shooting rifle, they often times tell me they need one.
The second reaction is I'll rip my arms off. I say alright and have my 9 year old send one down range. Then they roll their eyes and walk back to their bench. Either way it's just an opinion and if your too stubborn to test your opinion, then we agree to disagree.

I have no problem with people using whatever caliber they prefer for hunting. There has just been a lot of threads pushing minimum calibers for hunting on a long range hunting site. My opinion is I like being on the larger end. Seems to me bullet construction gets over looked in these conversations. Match your bullet to your velocity and type of game and you are good to go. A little common sense goes a long way also.

hunting all over the world for all kinds of game. But very little about the 338 LM
it should work on anything the other 2 do and then some?
The Lapua holds nearly 20 grains more powder than the 458WM. and shoots way flatter.

I think it's because of they mythos of the cartridge and it becoming more mainstream and affordable in recent years. I know when I bought mine a box of factory ammo was $120 minimum. Now I can go to Sportsmans Warehouse and grab factory stuff for $60- I wouldn't though.

There are also several 338 super mags out there for a person to choose from.

Some people are pretty funny. I have a friend who does very little hunting, but likes the idea of it. Always has to have the big magnum guns. His first bolt gun was a 338 wm. Scares him to death and he can't shoot it for ****, but he loves to take it to the range and talk about it so everbody knows he has a 338. He also had to have a 460 S&W...sometimes I wonder if guys like that(and there are more out there than we realize) are really just trying to compensate for something less than magnum in their pants. Seriously, this magnum stuff is like those short dudes with littleman syndrome that drive the big jacked up trucks to feel better about themselves LOL.

From what I have seen I don't think there are to many people on this website who would hunt with a rifle they can not shoot well. I do not remember reading a post here that hasn't put respect of the animal first. You are always going to have those kinds of people and the best we can do is try to educate them.

I work with a guy who hunts deer only and rocks the 300 RUM. He shoots it well but I still think he's nuts. He said if it doesn't leave a bruise after you shoot it it's not big enough. I said there's a clinical name for guys like him; it's called being a masochist lol...
