Too Frugal to shoot?

No slowing here in WY that I can see. Local guns/ammo dealers say business is brisk. It is getting more expensive, powder I paid $28-$32 per pound a few years ago is now $50+. Primers that were $45-$50 a brick are now $100. I know some of this is supply issues but I'll bet when the supply returns the price won't go down much if any.
Out of state hunters coming to WY are gonna be in fo a shock. Elk over $700, deer nearly $400, antelope over $300, and if you should draw a moose tag figure on taking out a mortgage.

It's about to get a lot worse for non-residents if this goes through! memtb

My shooting range (only 300 yards) is 40 yards from my back door. And, I am capable of shooting as far as I can see (miles +) within a few miles from home. Yet, still doing very little shooting!

Kinda reminds my of a warped rhyme from when I was a kid…….having opportunities, but not taking advantage! 😉

All of this for me to eat,
And I forgot my spoon"! 🤮

Inflation inflation inflation. Too expensive to drive to shoot and most don't have enough ammo to waste. It's only 15 minutes to the range and I enjoy it since there's usually nobody but me. I usually take my 22 or 223 to do most of the shooting and bring something bigger and only shoot about 10 shots with it.

For me it's the large rifle primers - I keep my LRP stocks at a certain level but have lucked out with a brick of Fed 215M last month. A LGS has an ample supply of small rifle primers. This means shooting with .20P, .204R, .223, and 6CM & 6.5CM.

Small rifle primer .22-.250 brass would be ideal. Primers like CCI 41's with extruded powders in 32-36 grain range would be good for much shooting. The .22-.250 is a much-underrated round and with pointy 75-80 grain bullets it approaches many mid-size 6mm rounds loaded with 105's up to 500 or so.

CCI 41's have proven to be satisfactory in SRP 6CM & 6.5CM with extruded powders, primarily the 4350's. Rem 7 1/2's are OK with lighter loads of ball powders, like 103 6CM & 140 6.5CM loads.

Less activity at local range, less range brass.

Our renewed interest in .22LR shooting - up to 200 rounds each range visit.

Big blasters, like .300WM & .375-.338 sit unused in back of gun safe.
I wouldn't doubt it at all that you could run enough sr creed cases through a 22-250 die set short and make up enough 22-250's to get you by for a spell on primers... My current 22-250 barrel isn't even on an action right now (I hung a 7-08 barrel on the action) so I can't test it for you without buying a rifle. You may have to watch your flash-hole diameter on the sr creed brass.

As to shooting a lot or a little; there always seems to be something i need to work on or a new toy in the house to develop a load for. Since Thanksgiving there's a new rifle, a new pistol, and a new muzzle loading pistol in the house and I re-scoped 2 rifles (+ scoping the new one) so they needed to be shot in.
I just got a brass delivery e-mail for the pistol today. It's sitting at the house waiting for me to get home tomorrow.
My local range is usually busy, but the cold weather and snow have kept people out a bit lately. I expect come spring it will be a rat race again.

You've just pretty much described my life! Other than others shooting at my place…..I'm pretty much anti-socia! 😉

Between the cost and availability of components and the present political scene…..I'm conserving the components that I've spent the last 40 years accumulating!

Though, I need to shoot more, as my heirs will not appreciate what I sacrificed to get what I have! ☹️ memtb
Adopt me, I would appreciate it!

Will look into this & report back.

I thouth it was
mommy, mommy give me a spoon Tommy barfed and Jimmy's getting all the big pieces

With mag primers and most sought out powder unavailable I find myself taking only one rifle at a time to the range where I used to take three/four and spend a long afternoon. But it's not bad as there are no lines and spacing is good to where muzzle break blast is minimal.

50 dollar a pound powder, 5$ a gallon diesel, 100$ for a brick of primers. One buddy shoots with a cartridge that's had such a shortage he hasn't launched a round not at game since 19'. Heck lunch is double what it was not all that long ago.

At some point it takes its toll. I'd like a bolt 9mm or for someone to make a decent kimber montana or rem 7 replacement in 223. Load them in the bubble car and budget shoot...

there are a lot of similarities with many of you and myself. I'm down to once a month now. My local range is about 45 mins away. Cost of ammo and diesel to get to the range is up 200-300% from a few years ago. I just organized my cabinet and found a few boxes of federal 308 with Sierra matchkings with a price tag that said $12.99. No idea when I bought those but it was more then a decade ago.

I also have 3 kids under 12 so many of my weekends I'm on daddy duty going to sports activities.

It is what it is. I want to shot more but so many variables keep me from doing it

Sounds like the liberals don't need any more laws to stop people from shooting.
Jill and I are part Shareholders of a Private PRS Range with only a small Shareholder group. Hardly see anyone shooting or hunting the past year. Has to be one of the nicest Ranges in the SE. We have done more trips for Maintenace than shooting, but I had/have a spinal cord injury. Can still shoot like I did years ago with the exception of the past month due to another spinal cord surgery.
Instead of our stock of powder/primers/bullets/brass getting lower it has been increasing. Hopefully Jill and I can start burning up powder and barrels soon. The weather will start to get better, and we can stay at the range for days at a time. Nothing like seeing a bullet trace through the air and drop into the target.
We wish that all can get out and practice more often and also do hunting of your choice.
From what I see on LRH we all have the firearms and ammo to shoot (a lot) since most of us are handloaders.
God Bless and pass on the shooting experience to the next generation!
