Time for the truth

The one thing I have to agree with is the absolute refusal to talk about the negatives of a long shot. Talking about those bad shots is how you learn from mistakes, its not "ethics" its facts. And fact is far too many "bang" a plate and think they are ready to shoot live game at extended range. The fact that wind reading is not much of a topic tells a lot. As a person shoots more on paper at distance, where distance from aim points can be measured, the more they realize they are human. I build long range rifles for a living, and in skilled hands I think its the most ethical kill a guy can make, but I despise the $$$$ marketing that makes guys think its easy if you open your wallet. Im sorry but if your range only goes out to 300yds you can not learn what the wind will do to your bullet at long range. Your apps can only take you so far.

Like most forums, there is excellent info here. You just need to sort through it.

Your guess is wrong. I just stated the facts as I see them. If you wish to disagree in a civil manner, that's fine.

I almost never disagree with a man's personal perceptions that have zero potential to impact my life.

I have no idea about 24 hr camp fire or whatever its called but I am hopeful you will hang around here for awhile. I kinda like your style in my own odd and highly competitive way. I bet I could learn a thing or 3 from you.

Besides you got that fine equine flesh and the only horse I'm more inclined to shine to than a 16 Hands Quarter is a 16 Hands smart, well-mannered, and sure-footed Appaloosa.

Sit a spell with us when you have time.

I'm good with this.

I will add that the start of this thread very much seemed like the op was here to wizz in as many cheerio bowls as possible with his 1st thread. Hopefully that was not the intent, but time will tell.

I grew up with that 16+ hand appaloosa quarter horse. Name was Jake. Would have loved to ride him in endurance, there was no stopping him.

Yup. I spent much of my childhood astride that Appaloosa I described. His name was Sam. He was 8 and I was 9 when we met. He was waaaayyyy smarter than me...

Since it seems important to you, I'll start by saying I've got 11 years in with 2 deployments. I saw actual combat, including a concussion from an IED blast and my vehicle taking shrapnel from a mortar round. These experiences have nothing to do with my ability to shoot long range, though. I'm no expert. I researched, researched some more and then joined a 1k range. This is how I've made progress, and any civilian can do the same. No reason to discount them because they didnt serve.

Len put right up front that he started this website for a place for people who like long range hunting and so that they would have a friendly place to discuss and learn. I'm not sure why you seem surprised to find people here who are wholeheartedly supportive of it.

Certainly the point I think you were trying to make is sound.. dont take the longer shot just because its longer. Shorter is always a higher percentage shot. But you are not correct to equate all long range hunters with the yahoos in your story. We here are the first to preach to only take shots within distances you know you can hit because you've actually taken shots in hunting positions at those ranges and therefore know your drops. Of course, I could easily point out hunters that can't reliably make kills at 100 yards. Skill and experience are absolute necessities regardless of what distance the shot is taken at.

If you'd like to stick around and learn and contribute, great! I'm not sure your going to get very far making accusatory posts like this. Maybe you're getting a little to comfortable with the curmudgeon in you, but respect and basic decency are still very much a good thing, especially after flaunting your military (LE?) experience. We are professionals, and are expected to hold ourselves to higher standards.

Thousands of threads on this site containing millions of comments from individuals who share many commonalities, and from individuals who share many differences.
I enjoy the rules Len and his administration have set in place over the life of this site. Afterall, there is no freedom without boundaries. Of all, you should understand this amongst the best with your military experience and the battles you have fought. However, the name calling is quite childish. I think that's why those who choose to act in such a way are usually warned, suspended, then eliminated if necessary.
Continue to dig deep through the threads and use it as a resource. Personally, I have learned more from this site than I could even fathom having needed to learn without it. That said, I have a very long long ways to go before I could ever consider arriving at the status of an authority of any aspect in shooting, gun smithing, reloading, PRC, PRS, benchrest, long range hunting, etc., all of which are well-discussed topics here.
Lastly, there are plenty of threads where commenters and authors alike talk about the things that can, have, and will go wrong at any variety of distances ranging from 20 yards to beyond 2,000 yards. My story is held within those threads along side many others.
You have more than twice my age in years behind a firearm, and three times my age experience in life. I hope to learn from your experiences as well.

Thanks I assume nothing but do take exception to being bullied and insulted.

Hence my resolution to avoid hot button issues.

If you cannot talk to a man on a computer they way you would across a table, whatever you planned to say is best left unsaid. ( that's what Ann Landers and Dear Abby told us all for decades. )😊
Everyone has their own way of communicating. Your style has a "looking down" on people mentality. This is why you believe you are being bullied. Just the couple statements in your post tells me this. You can absolutely have an opinion but having that and a form of disagreeing at the same time with someone else's belief or their experiences isn't the best way to maintain good communication here or anywhere. I can see you have experience and probably agree with most of the same stuff we all do but it's not necessary to agree. It's only necessary NOT to belittle or degrade because someone doesn't follow your beliefs. Also calling someone else's comment false or not true, none of this will help. Another thing I noticed. You don't take constructive criticism well. You call out members for name calling when they are only pointing out facts. Thin skin isn't a good trait to have in forums either. Everyone disagrees and one simple disagreement and your crying isn't a good trait to have here or anywhere. It doesn't spell " Tough dangerous game hunter". Also not sure what uniform your speaking of wearing but being offended by few statements of fact tell me that uniform may not have been an armed forces or LE uniform. Stick around and don't take what people say to be name calling or insulting but rather constructive. You probably have alot to share and I know for a fact you have alot to learn, even with your 7 decades of experience. One thing I've learned is just because I have 50 years of experience doesn't mean another guy with 10 years of the same experience isn't much better doing it. No two people learn the same or gain the same knowledge equally. Relax, listen and learn. No offense as this is simply my observation and my solution. John
