Threading a barrel without taking barrel off?

For What?

Can go through the headstock, if barrel isn't too long/unwieldy.
I have threaded muzzles on over 200 milsurps between centers, with tight-fiting mandrels in the bolt raceway.

Depends on level of precision needed as well.
i've used annular cutters and yes- a piloted die- on AK's where it's highly involved to do it any other way because precise concentricity is not needed for a slant brake.

Entirely different animal than threading for an 8" suppressor with 20 thou of baffle clearance.

Using a die will make the threads very rough. No one I've ever known can file a perfect circle. My Gramps apprenticed at Sauer in the double rifle's section. He could make almost anything with a file but he couldn't make a true circle. It's pretty easy to do threads with an action attached. It usually requires a spider on the back of the lathe head or at a minimum a good shimming in the through hole to prevent any wobble

I always assumed the barrel needed to be taken off in order to thread the muzzle ?
Is this correct, or is it like I just read on a different thread?
"Any gunsmith that can't thread a barrel without removing it shouldn't be a gunsmith."
For better results they do, otherwise it is done by hand. If it is just to install a muzzle break. then by hand is fine. If you are running a Can... remove the barrel to avoid a baffle strike

Do not thread your barrel with a die!!!

I have threaded hundreds of muzzles. Whenever possible I don't remove the barrel. What people don't realize, yes having the threads perpendicular with the bore is important but what it more important is having a square shoulder cut for you muzzle device to butt up to...how are you cutting the shoulder or thread relief with a die? I've fixed a couple of these issues after guys had baffle strikes on suppressors.

My lathe had a 4 jaw chuck you could screw on the left end of the headstock. So now you have it chucked on both ends. Indicate it close and make dead sure it's straight and concentric.
Chase those threads and square the shoulder and face might want to C/B the end while you have it all lined up?

Warning! This thread is more than 6 years ago old.
It's likely that no further discussion is required, in which case we recommend starting a new thread. If however you feel your response is required you can still do so.
