I am looking at the Terrapin X rangefinder and wanted to get some opinions before I make the investment.
I would like to be able to range a deer size animal out to 800yds or so. The Terrapin appears to have a small ranging reticle which would seem to zero in better on a target.
Most of my hunting is in Relatively flat, open country and with the larger reticles I'm not sure if I'm ranging the animal or whats behind him.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Take a look at the Leica stuff they have a very small beam divergence. That is what you are looking for. I looked at many not to long ago and decided that if I'm gonna spend that much money I would buy a pair of rangingfinding bios and get great bios and a great rangefinder together for less than both top end units separate.
I can tell you for certain that my Leica 1600b ranges deer very easily at 800 yard. I have even got blackbuck at 1100 with it several times this year while in Texas.
I think the biggest help is getting it stabile enough. Which was easy when clamped in my pig saddle.

The leupold 2800 is cheaper but still a class 2 laser, with a 1.172 mil beam divergence.
I get out past 2000 yards regularly. 1000y isn't even a question.
But for hunting, the vortex 1800 might be useful. Just in case it gets beat up.

So I'm not sure how it works but I do know Leica and vertronics have worked together .not sure what they swap but they do have some connection.
I've not been impressed with the Leupold rangefinders at all. My brother runs them and they are consistently not able to get ranges my leicas can and the glass is noticeably not as good. Not sure what they cost though so they may be worth it for the money. Just not my cup of tea.
To be honest I opened a can of worms when I bought my first Leica. It's hard to go back to anything with not as good of glass.

? They use to be the same company before they split

I have a Leupold 1200 TBR, Leica 700 (older version) and a Newcon 1800s. They all work fine on larger targets but in relatively flat South Texas, if there is a little morning haze they are useless past 200 yds. If I try to range a hog or deer in a field or down a fence line more than 300 yds , I can't say for sure if I'm reading the target or something behind it. Two weeks ago, in Texas I was trying to range a group of pigs in a rd. about 575yds. and a big boar in a field at 290yds. The Newcon wouldn't do it. It was frustrating.
I guess beam divergence is very important.
I was leaning toward Terrapin when I saw a review of it ranging telephone poles out past 1800 yds.
I also read where repairs and service was difficult.

I would say that if you have a cabelas near you you could grab a Leica and if it doesn't perform bring it back. But they have been great for me. Don't think the terrapin would be a bad choice either

Has anyone tried the Leica 2700 B ? It has some good reviews.
I was wondering if the bottom is threaded for a tripod mount?
My original thought was a Terrapin, but after reading some of the repair and service
experiences some have had, it made me think twice.

The terrapin is not the old terrapin company. Terrapin X is is made by by Safran Vectroincs in partnership with Leica. Good warranty and solid range finder.

I have one and its great! I have ranged deer out to 1200+ yards and cattle out to 1600. So yes it works great! I use it paired with my kestrel. If you don't plan on using it with a kestrel or other type of device you might save yourself some money and look at some of the less expensive models, Leica or Sig 2400 kilo with AB. The high end Newcons are really good also.
