Deer season ended yesterday and so did a 21 year streak of harvest. Normal shoot 3-5 but I got all starry eyed chased two bucks around the hunt club and didn't shoot a doe or three like I should have earlier in the season. Got to be mid December and I couldn't make it happen with just a few days left to hunt.
When it's your fault for not pulling the trigger and not the lack of opportunity it'll about make you shake your head and think what kinda dummy are you.

Worst part is with the new digital tags on an App you can't even boil up a pot of tag soup! Haha

Cash 14 points of putting in for a tag, invest several thousand dollars for a rifle, powder, primers, brass, bullets, equipment, fuel, time spent scouting for months, get choosey on what you want to shoot and then get out smarted by a herd of cow elk surrounding a big bull you can't get a shot on not just once, but twice, not only did I eat tag soup, I choked on it.

Yep, I ate my MT elk tag this year. Buddy did score on his first elk (with a bow no less). I was also fortunate enough to kill nice WT bucks in OH and WV this year and a good Nilgai in TX at the beginning of the year, so all in all, 2024 was a pretty good hunting year for me.

Yeah, I had a great year too locally. I filled both buck tags and took out a doe. I really can't complain since on a bad day on our property I was able to see 6 to 10 different bucks on every outing. So, it really was a great year too at least enjoying the abundance of wildlife so close to home. I guess I might put too much focus on those big ticket ($) hunts and judge my success for the year based on them….but that counts too.

I've done this exact thing numerous times years ago. Nowadays I usually shoot the first mature doe that I can to get one into the freezer. After that I can be as picky as I want.

Not really tag soup for me, although I haven't killed anything yet, it has been my choice. My place is low fence in a river bottom, some very large deer are taken in the area regularly, so I have let some very good young deer walk this year. All on my choice. We had a very deep and lengthy flood this spring, so lost a good portion of the fawn crop as well as some of the vines, yaupons and other browse were knocked back pretty heavily.
Bottom line is I have been chasing horns again this year and not seeing nearly the historical overall numbers, so I have enjoyed being there this year. Season closes this weekend, so "you never know until you go"!!! Maybe one of the two or three mature deer that I did see this year, with no shot, will show up and give me a chance.
