Stuck between which powder to select and brass suggestions

Pick ONE headstamp for your brass...as long as it is not the Hornady headstamp. Then weight sort it to within 1-3gr difference across 100 pieces.

Primer choice is great.

Powder: H4831 or H1000 for those you listed. RL23 if you want to buy something else. RL26 is great until you hit 84° (which could easily be on an early rifle elk hunt, many deer hunts, and almost any antelope hunt you draw in AZ. Then RL26 spikes pressure quickly.

Bullet: if you can get the 162 ELD-X to shoot, you should expect 2950-3050+. Other options to consider would be 160 Accubond, 165 Gamechanger, 168 HVLD, 175 SGK, 175 Berger Elite, 168/175 NABLR, even some of the match busts in 160-175gr like TMK, SMK, Match Burner, etc.

I am an AZ guy too. And hunt from -4° to 110°+. I use H1000 in my personal 7RM under a 180 Hybrid. Works wonders on game including elk from up close and personal to the next County over.

Haha of course I only have new brass for hornady... I spoke with my shop he said lapua is in the works for more brass including this one... so... one day... he also said norma had their brass made by nosler and that would be a quality choice... I do have friends with hornady brass with excellent life and results though.. one including a 300 WM with .4" group spreads... he too uses h1000
Berger bullets are absolutely next on the list I just want to finalize and work with this eldx for now

Heck, I use Rem R-P brass for my 7RM with pretty darn good results....

Just pick one kind of brass and go with it, they all work fine. Its best to weight sort but if your not shooting 600+ yards your not going to see much difference with the weight sorted brass.

My choices of the brass would be, assuming you have enough of all
1) WW-stretches less, last good
2) RP stretches a lot, but tuff
3) Hornady- Stretches and primer pockets seem to give out faster then the above two.


With 162gr EDLX I bet you best performance will be with 7828 or IMR or H4831. H1000 might not give the best velocities with the 162 gr bullet, its better with the heavier bullets. Lots of other good bullet choices as stated above

I use Hornady Brass in my 7mm Hunting Rifle, it works great. I couldnt get the 162 ELDX OR M to group so went to the 168 Bergers. Bergers on top RL26 and WLRM Primers shoots .3 consistently. Speed is 3030 FPS.

I like H1000 in my 7mm rem mag. I use norma brass but the others will work if taken care of. A light skim neck turning, annealing and partial full length resizing will cure most problems with the common brass brands.

Az, you posted a twist of 1:9.5. That is marginal for the heavier bullets. The heaviest I've found to be stable in the 1:9.5 is the 168's. +1 on the Hornady brass, I'm with Kenyon. Remington is fine, you just need to do more prep.

I fully agree that's why I'm at 162gn right now with a factory barrel... once I re barrel I will have better options and I do not mind the prep work for all cases its part of the job and I think ppl say it's bad if they have to do work... well for me case prep is still imo part of the process for consistency

My bullet selection for this time and development is the hornady eldx 162 grain
I've been working with (I wanted hodgdon) imr 7828
Temperature range is a factor for my hunting regions I'm in az in hot regions or hunt up north in the cold or maine/Wyoming
My primer selection is federal premium GM215M
I do have a bunch of factory once fired federal winchester super and Remington

New brass I have a bag of hornady

I say, its COAL and factory crimp that is key from my experience …

H1000 has worked great in several 7mm Rem Mags over the years for me. Have fun.

The 175 Berger Elite states 1:10" minimum twist. I will be loading those in a factory Tikka w. 1:9.5" soon.

Nice! I'm not familiar with the differences between my 111 trophy hunter and the LR I'm assuming barrel length? Same 9.5 twist? And whenever h1000 comes in I think that will be my powder I'll be working with and next bullet probably nosler accubond 168gr (called them today they claimed I would stabilize up to 175gr) thanks for the feedback!

What's your seating depth off the lands at 3.290 .250"? I know it's big on a factory length cartridge but I know it can help on some of the 7rm
