still looking need new rifle

You could buy my barely used Savage 270 WSM in the classifieds, buy a new 300 WSM takeoff barrel for $85 or an aftermarket one if you wished, add a long range stock and have a better rifle for the same price as that new long range one from Savage.

:D

The thought has crossed my mind to do exactly the above and shoot pre-loaded 300 WSM Berger Bullet ammo from the Hunting Shack. However, I'd rather sell this one and use my other rifle.

600 yards with a good 7mm or 30 caliber will give you great performance without excessive recoil. Going up to 1000 yards is a different ballgame.

Good luck on your search! Keep us posted.

That's not a bad idea. You should consider that offer.

A remington 700 338 ultramag would crush anything at that range and weighs 7 1/2 or so pounds. A Tikka T3 light in 338 winchester would be an excellent choice also. I have both of those and the Tikka is a pure pleasure to hunt all day with. Mine weighs just over 7 pounds scoped out. Both of these are very accurate rifles. The tikka has a great trigger on it.

LTLR,

Because I've considered a 338, a question -
What is the recoil like for either one? And do you have muzzle brakes or similar? My 270 WSM and my 7mm Wby Mag don't bother me at all. Moving up to a 338 w/o a brake on a 7.5 pound rifle doesn't sound like much fun unless I use my Lead Sled for all my shooting except when there's an animal in my sights.

I see the Grey Bull Precision guys using 7mm Rem Mags and 264 Mags. If they can do it then why punish myself with a 338.

Just thinking.

I agree with LTLRer on the Tikka T3 Lite suggestion. I have one in .300WM and have used it with great success on elk, blacktail and bear to 600 yards. I shoot 180g Accubonds at 3100fps and feel you would be allright to the range you mentioned but that is about it. I've had experience with 4 other T3's and all have shot sub-moa out of the box. They also come with good rings for 1" scopes which is a plus. Good Luck.

so you think the tikka in say the 300 WSM or 270 WSM is good out to 700 yard thats the longest i would shoot with it once i got all dialed in . and i dont reload either so how big of a roll does that play in it. i would prob use Federal Premium in either the accubond or the triple shock.. or try the berger VDL bullets . any input on that set up??

thank you guys so if i got the 300wsm in the tikka i would not have to do much to make 6-700 yard shots with it as far as after market work

My 300 wsm tikka shot 1/2" groups right out of the box at 100 yards. It does not require a brake. I am confident with that rifle out to 600 yards. I shoot 200 grain bullets in my 338 win mag tikka and can do that without a brake. The 225's are marginal and the 250's kick pretty good without a brake. The 338 ultramag requires a brake to shoot effectively. Mine is a puppy though with 225's and a brake. The 338 win mag has more pop for elk size animals if you go with the tikka. I am confident with the 300 wsm out to 600 yards with a well placed shot. The 338 just has a little more pop in it for a marginal shot. I am shooting the 150 e-tips at over 3400 fps with a .469 BC. That load shoots really well.

yeah i dont want to go with the 338 i kinda recoil shy i shot a 300 so i think i will be fine with the 300wsm. yeah 600 yards is good enough for me i just want a gone that i dont have to do alot of work to after i buy it and still be light the tikka t3 sounds like a good deal

I would highly recommend going to your local gunshop (or a Cabelas or Gander or similar) and check out the Tikka as well as some others. Evaluate the feel in your hands, use the bolt, shoulder the rifle. I know that the Tikka has a great accuracy reputation but I found that I was not a fan of the small ammo port, the action feel or the stock. You don't want to buy one online, for example, and find out it's not what you expected.

Good luck!

ok i live in oregon and hunt all the same animals i hunt in the detroit area i bought a rem 700 sps stainless in 300 ultra and havnt had a animal go more that 20 yds i do the same kind hunting ur talking about and since your having work done then u can have them put a muzzle brake on ur rifle mine kicks likea 243 its not bad at all my 12 yeat old brother shoots it and if ur not looking for that big of a shell then a 300 win mag will do the trick atleast your still using a 30 call bullet and deff want stainless around here with all the **** rain and i can get that rifle for about 530 dollars

I got a great laugh out of that line!

Thankfully only visit Detroit a few times a year; left the area after medical school and haven't missed it a bit! Though, I did feel more like the "hunted" than the "hunter"....

About the only thing I can think of to hunt in Detroit are rats and cats. :D

first choice: get a used rem 700 ( 400) put a krieger barrel on it 450. 850 . second get a tikka. third get a savage.
