Steel for 1500 yards+

Is there any reason why one would need AR500 steel for ELR (1500+). The biggest bullet we will be shooting is the 300 Berger at under 3000fps.

Could a guy get by with 1/4 - 3/8 mild steel plate? I have nearly 20 AR500 targets (10 x 10, 12 x 12, and 12 x 24 inch plates) for under 1500 yards, but am looking for a cheaper alternative for ELR.

My cousin used 3/8" mild steel for a deer shaped target the shoulder part he welded a piece of 1/4 for addition reinforcement for the targeted area. He said that at 1000 yards with 300gr bergers at 2850fps if it hits just the 3/8 part it just dents it, no pot holes from what he told me.

I shoot some 3/8 mild at 600 and out with 30 cals. they kinda sorta dent it. I am perfectly happy with the little dingers for the trade off of availibility.
everything under 600 is AR500

If you already have two 12x24 AR500 targets, just hang them side by side for a 24x24 target.....no out of pocket cost that way.

My edge went through plain 3/8 steel at 1250 haven't had a chance to shoot at 1500 yet.

That make no sense...I will then be taking two targets down that I already use. Is there no expence in replacing the two targets that I robbed off of my range???? The targets that are in place are there for a reason....and are used. And those NEED to be AR 500.

My bad. You never stated they were all being used and continually hung in a permanent position. You just stated you had 20 AR500 plates, from 10x10 to 12x24.

I would LOVE to have a place to permanently hang 20+ targets, and not have to put them up/take them down with each outing.

You need to get your butt up here some time and give me a lesson!! I know I am off the beaten trail up here, but I am not THAT far off!! We could make a day (or two) of it!!!

As far as "permanent position"...most are. But, I do hang a few pieces out on the river deltas. But I need to take them down in the spring to make sure they don't wash away in the spring flood waters. They go back up as soon as the water goes down. Actually a pretty sweet setup!! I don't have anything up yet on the 1728 spot....we just shoot at rocks,dirt lumps for now. thinking of a 24 x24 there.

I'm going to have to mosy up your direction one of these days. Looks like a dandy set-up, except for the haul up and down.

I have two 12"x24" pieces of 500 steel that I hang side by side for way out there stuff, but I have to take them home every time.
