Shortening a tiny pointed screw?

Couldn't find an appropriate screw, so project is on hold. I measured the OEM screw, and it's definitely a #5, but I counted/measured the threads, and it seems like it's ~45 tpi. Since I don't see anything other than 5-40, I'm gonna assume it's actually 5-40.

Thanks for the tips so far. Even if they don't get used on this project, they may come in handy for others.

Don't know why it would be metric but it sounds like it could be an M3-0.5
