short mag build

I had a 300WSM built in a long action, shooting 210 Berger's at 2850. SAC built rifle with a Bartlein Sendero contour 24" barrel, manners EH-1 elite layup stick. Shoots lights out. Not a 9lb rifle, but not too far off. I'll upload a pic in a few.

Would have done 7WSM the same way and those two would be my choice.

I would like to build a short mag long range mountain rifle. I want a lighter gun without a muzzle brake. Brass availability is important to me. It will be used for deer and elk out to 1000 yrds, I prefer 7mm or bigger. My old faithful 300RUM is too heavy for long hikes. What caliber/load do you recommend?
300 WSM

It's a long action.

It's built with a .195 freebore and my smith didn't recommend a short action. The stock isn't offered in the xm action. As in anything, it's a compromise.

I picked the saum for ease of tuning, brass availability, die availability and light recoil.
What stock you using that wouldn't except a XM Iength action?

If you really want the short action, just don't shoot he heavier bullets for whatever cartridge you decide on.

Sorry I should have included that detail in my original post. I would like to use high BC bullets (180+in the 7mm)(210+in the .30)

My light weight is a 7 Saum, AntiX long action, 22" proof 8.4" twist Sendero Light and AG Stock. Love it.....would highly recommend it......and I most certainly would shoot 180 Hybrids in it. All my 7 saums shoot them from 2,970' to 3,020'.
I've used VLD's, I'm not familiar with Hybrids. Can you hunt large game with them?

My nephew and I just took 2 Bulls in my 30-28 and 215 they dropped like they had been hit with Thors hammer between there eyes.

The ELITE Hunter is very similar to the Hybrids. They are not as sensitive to seating depth. Some Hybrids have very closed up tips though. I use the hybrids for hunting and I open the tips using a wire jewelers bit. I just used the 144's on a Antelope hunt and I opened the tip with a .060 bit. I then modify the BC by .002-.003 and it works like a charm. Took my goat at 543 this year. This was using a 65PRC.

Help me understand why not a short action, is it too small for the longer bullets?
To make it work you need a gunsmith to extend your freebore for the longer bullet so you don't have to seat it so deeply.. Then you have to get an extended magazine box and follower and have a gunsmith open up the the bottom of your action to allow it to fit. You will also have to open up the ejection port and shorten the bolt stop so the bolt is allowed to move back farther to pick up the longer cartridge. The longer ejection port also avoids causing the ejection to be killed by hitting the the old smaller port when an each reaches the end of the bolt through.
