Short Barrreled 300wm

As a reference point to 30-06.... Hodgdon on line data has 4 180 grain loads exceeding 2800 fps and 9 more that are between 2700-2790.

That said I still own a 300 WM with a 24" tube.... about the minimum length in my opinion for that case to realize it's full potential.

Anyone running a short barreled 300wm-22" or so? Just wondering how well something like that does, how much velocity is lost etc.?
Would probably add a brake, wanting a lighter weight backpackable rig that would give me a little more than the .06.

I developed a load a few years ago for a 300WM 18" Barrel on a Desert tech SRS Covert. I tried numerous powders and I got the best results with H4350. I used Norma Brass, 185 grain Berger VLD Hunting Bullets with 69.8 Grains of H4350. 40 thou off the lands. Velocities of 2720.
Hope this helps.

I have a Savage 116 Bear Hunter in 300 WM that has a 23" barrel, that's including the factory muzzle brake. I want to say that the barrel without the brake would come in at about 21". It's a shooter, with 200 gr Nosler AB's I am seeing right around 2875 FPS with my handload. This gun is still offered by Savage, but they now call it the 110 Bear Hunter ...hope this helps.

I bought the 16 Bear Hunter is 300 WSM to build a Sherman off of but was curious of the WSM's legendary accuracy so I started by chopping off the Savage brake with funky 9/16-28 threads(I think) and rethreading to 5/8-24 and added a Beast. Ran 100 rounds for break in and FF brass with 200 grain pills and IMR 4350 using berger starting loads (~59 grains at ~2700) at mag length, straight from the Chargemaster. I let a non shooter GF burn up some rounds and she went something like 12/15 on steel 600 to 800 yards. Then I annealed, sorted, etc. and ran a ladder in 0.5 grain (FX-120)increments with H4350 at 700 yards and came up with a 1.5 grain (2 shots of each 3 charge weights, 6 shots total)window that printed 2" of vertical and ~30 ES. I have not retested yet but I narrowed it to the lower section 1.2 grains of the window and have 8 rounds of each charge to shoot in 0.4 increments. Scope is a Zeiss V6 3-18x50.
I kind of like this $600 rifle and am not sure I want to tear it down, but that 300WSM is pretty easy to load for. Probably end up doing a custom in 300 WSM...LOL

I have an out of the box Browning 300WSM and added a brake. I shoot Barnes 168 g. TTSXs at around 31-3200fps with RL17. I've never shot anything over 550 yds, but it's been lights out for lots of great animals, including 3 of my 4 sheep and a top 20 caribou. I like the 22" barrel because of the hunting packability and I've never noticed any need for more length. It's been a great hunting rig!

Again, Thank you all for the replies!
I am thinking about this for a TC Encore rifle which tend to be on the light side anyway and would be really handy in a 22" barrel. I've had good accuracy with other barrels on this setup! Kinda wish it wasn't such a pain to get a suppressor!!

I have a 300 win mag with a 22" barrel and am getting an average of 3025 fps with h4350 and 180 gr hornady interbonds with good accuracy. The rifle is a custom with a 12 twist barrel I got a good deal on at a pawnshop.

I have savage 110 tactical 300WM with 20" barrel getting 3050 180gr ballistic tip with RL 22, 75.5 gr. This load has worked wonders in 4 different rifles, sub 1/2 moa. Velocity with magneto speed

Have Sako SV with factory 18"300 wm....Open sighted, got for Africa/Alaska hunt that got cancelled. Been in back of safe for yrs now. So put 2.2-9 Sworovski on there and man does that combo shoot 180-190's on top of H4350 with vel in the low 2800's Very mild recoil too. cant wait to drop an Axis this yr for some meat with that rig...
