Shipping Scopes…?’s

I'm curious of what others may know about this, but this is my interpretation. I've used pirateship for a while and love it. Most of the time I don't add insurance. The last time I did, it appeared like the insurance was through a third party and not through the carrier (UPS/USPS). I see this as a possible upside as there are a lot of horror stories of carriers denying insurance claims for anything that even looks like it could be associated to a firearm. Though I don't know anything about the third party insurance (assuming it even is third party).

I do not know how Pirateship operates. I can tell you that "Declared Value Coverage" is provided directly by UPS. It is not technically insurance since UPS is not authorized to sell insurance products. Claims are made through UPS or if shipped through a The UPS Store they can help you. The claim is researched by UPS and paid directly by them.

"The UPS Store" is an independently owned and operated retail store. They are required to comply with UPS restrictions. UPS restricts the shipment of gun parts by individuals. Optics are not considered gun parts by UPS and should be accepted by The UPS Store. However, some owner/operators are not aware of the nuance and may not accept a "rifle scope". Labeling it an "optic" is completely honest and can avoid the issue. Always package it securely and add the appropriate amount of insurance value. Insurance will cover it for loss during shipping but not damage if personally packed.
I believe USPS will accept shipment of non-regulated gun parts by individuals.
I am not familiar with how FedEx or any of its proxies operate.
Weird. I've shipped plenty of gun parts via UPS, I just box it up myself and don't declare what's in it. Barrels, triggers, scopes, Bipods. Never had an issue but I don't bring the parts in the store unboxed usually either.

If it is a decent scope ($1000 or more), and you don't declare what it is, will the shipper (UPS, USPS, FedEx etc) insure it for the value you declare? In case of loss, are they going to pay you the $1000 declared value without you listing the contents (brand, model, etc)?

When I shipped my Zeiss Dialyt Diavari C scope back to Zeiss for warranty repair, I listed the contents exactly what it was, including the serial #.

I had a scope malfunction, I sent it back and they sent me a replacement through UPS and no problems. I made no big deal of it and the new scope arrived no problem, very seamless.

If you have something damaged, lost or stolen, and it is a prohibited item, they will not honor the insurance. I package everything I ship well and in the last 14 years I have never had a shipment lost or damaged by UPS, USPS or FedEx.

I use gorilla tape to seal up every side of the box and pack things tightly. Shipping has gotten outrageous, I used to be able to ship a long gun insured for $15 by FedEx. Now it will cost me north of $50, maybe much more depending on insurance amount, by all three carriers.

I'd like to hear from those who have had shipments lost or damaged to see how the insurance was honored. It is common knowledge among FFL's that none of the shipping companies pay out on insurance claims and will find a reason to not pay or drag it out. Many just self insure, never pay for the insurance and eat the cost when something goes wrong.

The first $100 of value is automatically included with a UPS shipment. There is an additional charge per $100 in declared value above that. The charge can vary at different The UPS Stores. In order to declare additional value, you must give a general description of the contents. In the event of a loss claim you may be required to provide proof of value. The more accurate the description of the contents the easier it will be to be reimbursed.
