Okay Im new to this forum and hope this is the right area to ask this. I want to build my first rifle and I would like to go with the Savage Target Action, and I would also like to put a 300 RUM and maybe later put a .338 edge. So my problem is that savage target action doesn't have a big enough bolt head to it and I don't know if it will stand up to the pressure. But from what I have read is that the savage action could take that and much more. So my question is. Do I change the bolt head, where do I get one, and is that all I have to do?

Thanks
PaulB.

Yes you will need a new bolt head. A magnum bolthead is all you need. It's about a 10 minute swap.

Any reason you are using the target action and not a CRF WSM action? They are cheaper and already have the correct (better) bolt head.

You can get the parts from Midway or a complete bolt head from Sharp Shooter Supply.

The new short action mag bolt heads are push feed but you'll need some other parts to use one(front baffle and firing pin). The short CRF bolt head will work but you'll need to machine the action for an ejector or go without. A long action push feed bolt head that's been cut to length will work without any other parts.

Where would you get the CRF WSM action? Are they more of a factory action or more based around a target action?

Any of the WSM Savage actions with stagger feed are CRF. Savage just recently switched from stagger feed to center feed. They eliminated the CRF at the same time. The target action is the same as WSM actions except for the lighter accutrigger, smaller ejection port, and the third action screw since they are single shot.

Bountyhunter got the information for savageshooters.com. Fred from sharp shooter supply is a regular as well as a sponsor there. He listed them in the sponsor classifieds there.

He will also do a sex change on a Savage. Convert a right hand to a left hand action.
