The 25-35 was pretty popular in the lever action. Made a nice trapline gun. I have a pretty darn old win 94 that lived up north. It must have had some pretty interesting stories. The owner died back in 2010 and he was 80 had been a trapper his whole life.Never could figure out why Winchester didn't just neck down the 30-30 to 25 caliber. It's got more taper and longer neck that a 30-30 and they called it a 25-35? Go figure.
To me the 25-35 would have been a natural choice for the the whole 340 series. I think Savage missed the boat by not chambering the rifle for itThe 25-35 was pretty popular in the lever action. Please don't tell us it's a takedown model and the old octagonal barrelMakes me curious too. The place I work has a Savage 99 made in 1905 in 25-35. 26" barrel. Shows its years outside, but barrel looks OK. I may have to give it another good look..
No and no.Please don't tell us it's a takedown model and the old octagonal barrel
I would. Thing with the 99 and the 340 is it gives you the ability to use spire point bullets giving you a much broader range of bullet weights to choose from in the 25-35 and modern powders allow an increase in velocity. Some powders show up to 200 fps difference in the 30-30.Makes me curious too. The place I work has a Savage 99 made in 1905 in 25-35. 26" barrel. Shows its years outside, but barrel looks OK. Only problem I have with the 340 is the trigger and 3 round mags. I take the triggers apart and stone them and do some spring bending so that's not a big deal but it is an odd design. Gonna cut a mag up and tig it back together and make it 4 rounds instead of 3. One I'm working on now got a Boyds' laminate stock and I flattened the bottom metal, sunk it into stock and did away with the barrel band. looks a lot nicer. People can't believe it's a 340 when they first see it.To me the 25-35 would have been a natural choice for the the whole 340 series. I think Savage missed the boat by not chambering the rifle for it
Only 340 firing pin spring I've had to replace was on an old 340 22 Hornet someone had brazed the factory mount onto the receiver. I assume this was done with bolt still in rifle as the spring was really weak. When I came home from the U.S. Army in 1965 I hunted a few years with a childhood friend who had a 340 Savage in 222 Rem. The side mount for the scope about drove us crazy. Zero the rifle in, Haul it to a nearby groundhog meadow. The point of aim would change.
Many Savage 340s have age on them, May need a new firing pin spring. And the rabbit hole may get deepen.
