I want to build a 7wsm on a long action and was looking at savages web site and saw that the 300win and 7rm had different part #'s. I was thinking the bottom metal is different?? Which one would i want?

Well here are my thoughts and take it for what it's worth. The 7mm WSM is designed originally as a short action caliber. However, due to the many bullets and lengths that it can shoot effectively... a short action may cause issues when trying to eject a loaded case with a 160grn bullet or heavier due to length. Generally having to release the bolt to eject a non-fired round. Therefore a long action sometimes is the preferred package when using VLD's. But if you leave the gun loaded during the course of the hunt, then you won't have to eject until the end of the hunt or the day, what ever the case may be resulting in pulling the bolt out not that big of an issue.

But you can use a short action in many cases especially if you are going to shoot lighter bullets. In some instances if you load a bullet to mag length, through using different powders and length combination's providing usability of the provided magazine. A good example is my 300WSM. It is built on a Savage short action with DBM. My 208grn Hornady A-max's are currently seated .005" off the lands. This keeps the tips of the bullets off of the inside of the magazine and providing .6 to .7 MOA at 245 yards. I am waiting to go longer to see how it does, but at 100, 200, and 245 yards, it is consistently in the .7 MOA or less. I usually get one flier which is more than likely me rushing a shot or not sitting on the rifle the same.

So to answer your question, any of the actions will work. Personally I would build off the target action in the Dual port (right bolt, left load, right eject; good for rapid fire with no magazine) or the right bolt and left port model. It is nice to work the bolt with the right hand and catch the casing with the left. If you want a repeater then the varmint with the DBM would be my option. If you plan on using 168, 180, VLD's (Berger, or JLK) then the long action might be the better option for loading into the lands and still maintain a repeater, or if you are going to shoot single shot, than refer to the above. Think application in you decision, Prairie Dog rifle/Ground Hog/predator, silhouette, tactical comps (multiple quick shots: DBM, or internal box mag), or Deer/Elk, paper target (slow rate of fire: single shot).

Just get a Stevens 200 in 7mmMag or 300win. Either one, doesn't' matter.

Swap barrels and stock.


If I weren't left handed that's what I would have done.


Currently my 7mmWSM barrel is on a 112FLVSS action in a Stockade Pdog special.

I also have a new long action centerfeed action and DBM stock on my 300wsm.

I also have a 338 Edge that's on an old long/short 110 action.

Thanks guys.. I like the idea of the LRPV left port with medium barrel on a mule deer or woodchuck stock. The mule deer looks a little lighter for a carry rifle. Does anyone know the weight of each?

I built my 7-300WSM on a long action DBM action and had the chamber reamer cut such that it allows me to jam the bullets .005" when the base of the bullet is at the neck shoulder junction and not taking up space in the case.

It is running 180VLDs at 2900fps. It is a hot load but just below where I start seeing any significant pressure signs.

My rifle is a Mod 12 Low Profile w/DBM. It started as a .308 Win and since has been reamed to a 300WSM. I currently have a load of 62.0grn of H4350, 208grn A-max, Wolf LR primer, Win. brass (sized, trimmed, flash hole deburred, primer pocket uniformed), 2.260" COL that is shooting .690 MOA at 300yrds. It may have been better had the wind not been blowing. This is a short action rifle. Even with the bullet just touching the lands, they just fit in the mag or some would call set to mag length. Not sure of the velocity yet because I have been playing around with the load some. It should be in the 2975 to 2985 fps range.

I just finished a 7-300WSM built on a Savage DBM Long action. I had my reamer cut to suit the 180 Bergers and have been very pleased. Mine was a 300WM originally and it feeds slick as can be.

Mine was a 116FLHSSin 7mmRM. Took the barrel off and put on my 26" small shank Krieger (300wsm) varmint taper. Replaced the hinged bottom metal with a long action DBM. Each mag holds 3 rounds. The centerfeed feeds very well. Much better than the old staggerfeeds.

I'll swap stocks next. Looking at the new Choate tacticals as soon as the LA LH ones are available.

I just picked up a new 111 fhns for 329.00 on close out. Im thinking stockade stock and medium contour barrel in 7wsm. How hard will it be to convert to DBM?

Couldn't be easier. The DBM swaps straight in place of the hinged floor plate.

Just remember to have Kevin inlet the stock for it.
