Savage 12 LRP vs Savage 10 Predator 24"

I am no expert from what I have read the creed will burn a barrel sooner than the 260 but not as bad as the 6.5x284. Also the write up I read on the 6.5x45 lapua, 260, and 6.5creed the results were too close to choose one that out performed the others.

Last week I ordered in a Sav lrp in 6.5 creed and a TC precision hunter in 6.5 creed.

I have been shooting both and the results thus far have been interesting, I am shooting the factrory hornady 120 a-max load, the 140 a-max load should ship in this week.

I have about 60 rounds thru the TC 22" barrel and velocity is running around 2830-2850 fps. With 20 rounds thru the savage it has been in the 2930 range.

How they Shoot;

TC;
Factory trigger was at 3.25 lbs. and as light as she would go, I gutted the trigger housing and now have it at a very crisp and completly safe 2 lbs. No slam fires whatsoever.
This gun disapointed me with my initial inspection, cosmetically looks great, bedding system great, Chamber cut in the lead area visably off center with a bore scope inspection, 5r barrel looks ok, definatly not lapped, has some scratches that run down the bore in a straight line not "with the twist" so a bit curious how they came to be, the last 1/2" of the muzzle has some scratches that were put in it after rifling the barrel, not really sure what TC is doing. 1 st range session of 20 rounds left considerable copper fouling in the bore.

But this gun is a hammer, Second range session; the first 3-5 bullets out of a very clean bore shoot in about an inch, then the barrel gets good and copper fouled and it comes into it's own.

I have shot many 3 and 5 shot groups under 1/2" at 100 yards today. The last 5 shot group of the day after I let it completly cool off had 4 into less than .250" with the second shot going slightly left which I called with a mirage shift in the scope, opening it to still under 1/2".

So on the TC so far it likes; fouled barrel, CBS is in the group, definate sub 1/2 moa rifle with factory load. Is going to make a great factory light gun for the VHJ this summer.

Savage;
The bore scope showed a relativly nice barrel typical savage machining marks from the drill and button process, not showing the scratches as the TC had. This lead/throat was also visably unconcentric but not to the extent of the TC. The action on the LRP is structurally the same as the target actions with the adition of the cut out for the DBM system. This is nice and makes a much stiffer action than the factory sporter actions as the loading port is the small target style. Trigger was factory at 1lb, 4oz.

Well this gun has only seen one range session so I have yet to find it's consistancies, but what I will tell you is the first 5 shots out of this new rifle went into 1/2" at 100 yards, 4 of those cutting the same hole. I set the rifle aside for 5 minutes and the next 3 bullets went into .900" group *** I said, had pretty high hopes with the first group.

So I don't let it cool and I shoot 5 more and all but one of those created a nice tight sub 1/2" group with one of the 5 opening it to 3/4". I give the girl a break and the next group is similar to the last. At this point with no brake-in I'm calling it, as I need to see how the fouling is laying down when I take it back to the shop. I'm sure this rifle will come around, so wait a bit and I will continue with it this week. IF it dosen't the chambers getting puched out for the modified class.

I'm thinking of buying the Predator 10 in the 6.5 creedmore, I have a Savage 10 Tactical, in 308 with the HS Precision stock, Do you guys think the barreled action of the 6.5 creedmore will drop right in to the HS stock since it is molded for a short action 308.

just in case i wanted to swap stocks.

On barrel life vs the 260. From the velocities I am seeing, and the box suggest a load with varget powder for reloadin/copying the factory balistics. I would think the barrel life of the 2 will be near identical with a slight edge to the CM, that could be eliminated based on how you shoot it more than the cartrige diferences.

I run a 140 a-max with my 260 at either 2730 or 2835 depending on which of my 2 loads I use. I am sure the 2835 load is hotter than the factory CM rounds. The 2730 is my accuracy load. I wouldn't even consider basing my choice on barrel life between the two. Not enough there to matter.

I have the Predator in 22-250 and a Model 12 in 223. The Predator actually produces better groups than the model 12. Typical .25-.5 for the Predator...hot or cold, clean or dirty. No change in point of impact. Model 12, .5-.7moa. The big difference is that I can get the tiny groups for the 22-250 consistently with 3 types of factory ammo. I have to hand load to get the performance out of the Model 12. I did have open up the stock on the Predator...it was contacting the barrel. It wouldn't group at all before this was done. I considered getting the 6.5x284 but I thought the barrel was too short at 24". Have an order in for for the Long Range Hunter, The predator is very nicely balanced and about the max for me as a carry gun with off hand shootability if required.

I am ordering friday and I am still undecided. Is there a huge difference in 2in of barrel length?

I've been on and off this thread since it started. Not sure if you mentioned what you will use this gun for. If walking around is in the picture the 10 Pred will be more user friendly than the LRP Varminter. The latter is a heavy rifle.

the model 12 is a heavy gun, I finally got it out today and it seems to shoot awesome. I focused more on barrel break in then accuracy and sighted in on clay pigeons at about 150 yards. The barrel seemed to clean out really quick. Maybe I just didn't know how to do it correctly but after the first shot I brushed 3 times with brake free, then was clean after about 7 patches. after about the third round, it cleaned with like 4 patches till i got white patches. I got lazy and started doing it every 4th or 5th shot and it still cleaned on the 5th or so patch. So far I really like the gun but with a vx III 6.5-20, egw 20 moa base, burris tac rings and a stoney point bi-pod its a pretty heavy gun. I picked up some h4350 and federal match primers today I have some 140 Amaxs on order but im going to start some loads with some 100 gr btips and see how that goes, once I get some real testing I'll do a small write up on what I've found.

cool thanks I sent the order and it is going to be a 12 LRP in 260 so when it gets here I will post pics. I ordered and received from Midway USA some 140gr Berger VLDs and RCBS 260 dies. I bought some Winchester7mm-08 brass and Federal match primers.

Great... I ordered my 3 weeks ago and still no rifle... I already load few rounds for break in, I guess I'm moving to fast...

I think you made a good choice! What are you going to do for glass and a base? I will say that not being used to a 20 moa base its not comfortable to me in a prone position, going to take some getting used to or a modification of some kind to get a higher comb.

I am going to use a 20 moa base, and a leupold LRT in either a 10x40 or 4.5x16x50 mil-dot
