Can someone point me to a quick reference on choosing the correct components to complete a savage barreled action?
I picked up one from the classifieds today.
Will need the following:
Action screws
trigger guard
mag box? Or does it utilize a box?
Follower and spring?
What is center feed vs staggered feed?
And of course a stock...
Am i missing anything?

I've never had a savage before. I am putting this together for a young man with limited funds.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Chad,

You have a few chassis stock options too but they are a lot pricier.

Good luck!

Tell us a bit more about the action. Savage has done some strange things over the years and it will help us give you good info if you tell us exactly what you have.

Is it really a 110?
What is it chambered for?

The mag opening can tell if it is stagger feed or center feed.
-Longer with rounded ends would be a center feed. The mag box will attach to the stock. These are usually round rear actions. Remember that when you are looking for scope mounts.
-Shorter opening with squared ends will be stagger feed. The squared ends will also be slotted for mag box tabs. The mag box will be attached to the action. These are usually flat rear actions for your scope mounts.

Obvioulsly, the mag boxes and followers are different. Springs come attached to the follower.

Action screws are 1/4"x28. If you get them from the hardware store, look for button head cap screws. The length will depend on what stock you are using. Generally, they are 1.25" on the front, and 1.5" on the rear for wood stocks. A little longer for the factory synthetic stocks.

Trigger guard screw will again depend on your stock. It can either be a wood screw or machine screw depending on your stock.

That should be enough to get started. Post a picture if you can, it will be helpful.

I forgot to add on my original response that you can call Savage Arms with serial number to verify exactly what you have and you can order most of the parts ...

Thanks to all who provided useful info!
Im just wanting to avoid buying something that doesn't fit.
It chambered in 7mm Rem.
It does have the flat rear receiver bridge like a Rem 700.
It does have the top bolt release.
I don't actually have it yet to inspect the bottom of the action.

Is there actually a box with both styles of magazines or is the mag box just a hollow part of the stock on one design?

Thanks again,
Chad

Ok, flat rear indicates that it is a stagger feed.

There are mag boxes either way.

Your stagger feed box will have tabs that will hold the mag box to the action. The follower spring will just rest on the bottom of the hollow part of the stock.

Since you have a stagger feed, any long action Savage stock will work. If you use a center feed stock, you can just bed the relief in the stock where a center feed mag bracket would go.

Any of the stocks that Feenix listed is good to go. My favorite would be a Boyds Pro Varmint. I have one on my LH 7mm. I like the shape, the inlet in very good , and the price is very cheap.

My next favorite is my Stockade Pdog/Tactical. Very well made, and also a great shape for long range work.

Feenix and Geargrinder,
Thanks again!
I like the Boyd's Pro Varmint too:
Ultimately it will be up to the young man who I am helping with this project.
I think I have enough info to make choices that will fit the rifle.
I'll check back if I have any challenges.
Chad
