RL-17 in a 7mm-08

These #'s must be from short barrels??? 24" and under?? Im getting an 7mm-08 improved this week chambered on a benchmark 3 grove and have a 28" blank that I was going to cut off around 26.5 or so. Hopeing to shoot RL 17 with 162'S and launch em around 2850 2900! Maybe im dreamn!!!

I would think you should get close. I use Re 17 and the 162 Amax in a standard 7-08 to get 2725ish out of a 23" barrel.

I've been playing with my 7-08 , maybe I can help . I have a 24"bbl . reloader 17 powder , 168 berger hunting vld . norma brass . roughly 70 *F at 1200 elevation . these loads are hot . at 46.0 I had to much case head expansion . in about 4 or 5 shots the primer pockets were getting a little loose . I did not keep loading up to get the stiff bolt lift or any other classic high pressure signs , I stopped at 46.0 . I can say that 46.0 gave me 2812 ave fps at 35*F . Jim

45.4 grains powder
2787 , 2796,2825,2824 , forgot to log last shot

45.5 grains
2827 , 2836 , 2839 ,2814 , 2829

45.6 grains
2841 , 2826 , 2838 ,2849 ,2843

45.7grains
2841 , 2848 , 2852 , 2830 , 2842

I'm now using the 140 grain berger hunting VLD , reloader 17 powder , norma brass , . my chrony is affected by sun or clouds . this day was overcast then the sun would come out bright , so that is some of the velocity spread . Jim

47.0 grains
3001 , 3031 , 3056

47.5 grains
3072,3052,3060 ,

48.0
3089,3050,3124

48.5
3124 ,3143 ,3120

49.0
3141 ,3144, 3123

Jimbries,

Aliants reloaders guide listed a max load of RL-17 with the 145 grain bullet at 46 grains. Your numbers exceed the listed max by quite a bit. Do you get any pressure signs at the velocities you are getting? Where did you get your reload data from to start working up your loads?

400Bull , I have quickload , if you want I can run your info and tell you what quickload says is max for your bullet . my quickload shows Berger 140's max at 47.8 grains @ 60,000psi . no I have no pressure signs at 49.0 grains 65,000psi with the Berger hunting VLD 140's . I have not loaded hotter than this . I am happy with the results so far at 48 and 49 grains . I'm going to hopefully fine tune in this area .

49grains @100 yds . I shoot my indoor pistol targets over again with the rifle so disregard the small 22 holes .

48 grains @ 100yds

my Berger 168 load was way way past max . I still never got a sticky bolt , I watch case head expansion too. my 46.0 grain load was getting , close to but under .0005 ( half a thou ) but after 4 or 5 reloads my primer pocket was getting stretched . I finally smartened up and gave up on trying to push the 168 that fast . stupid hurts buddy !! I also found better accuracy by not pushing them so dang fast . but it was way to slow to be of interest to me .
I think this was 41.0 or 41.5 grains @ 400 yds upper left target , I was running a ladder in the center . Jim

Not sure what you will need to run my data but here is what I have got on hand. The rest I will have to pull when I get home from work.
Nosler 140 Accubound
Winchester Large Rifle primer
Winchester Brass (not sure of length)
Powder of interest is RL-17 (Varget and H414 if RL does not work out for me)
Rifle will be a Browning 7mm-08 X-bolt (I believe it's a 22" barrel)
COL length to start with will be 2.840 (.040 off the lands)
If there is anything else that you need please let me know.

you gave me what I need .
the 7mm-08 is rated at 60,191PSI max . a rule of thumb is to start 4.0 grains below max and work your loads up watching for pressure . hope this helps . Jim

I used a 22"bbl , 140 accubond # 59992, 2.840 COAL , 70*F temp
RL17powder ,
45.9 grains ,59986PSI ,2891FPS , 100.1% case fill MAX LOAD
46.0 grains ,60422PSI ,2898fps , 100.3% OVER MAX LOAD ********

varget
42.7 grains ,60134psi , 2807fps, 100.9% , MAX LOAD
42.8 grains ,60564 psi, 2813fps , 101.2% OVER MAX LOAD **********

H 414
46.6 grains ,59854psi ,2858fps , 100.1% , MAX load
46.7 grains ,60293 psi ,2864fps, 100.3% , OVER MAX LOAD *********

broke barrel in today and after some fireformed case was reloaded I maxed with pressure at 2960 with a 162 hornady match bullet with 47 grns of rl 17. seems to shoot well right at or around 2880- 2900 fps so im happy:cool:

heres what 47.2g of RL17 and 140 gamekings do in my daughters 7mm/08 xs7y marlin.going to chrono and retest the load tomorrow . i did try a little hotter load and it didnt like it and opened up the group alot, these two groups were shot at the end of the day to confirm if they were the best loads i had done.the single round above the bull is the 7mm/08 after a adjustment.the other group is a .270 marlin im working on with rl22,i pulled the round on the right and new it when i did it.the gun will shoot 1" with fusion 150g ammo so im trying to better it.
