Hey guys just picked up some 190grn vlds for my 300wm and was wondering if y'all had any suggestions with powder charges using h1000? I was using this same powder before with 168's and had great results extremely accurate. I was advised it was to slow but I can't understand why. Hornady lists h1000 in their manual as well as the hogdgon manual for a lot of light weight and the heavier bullets can anyone explain? Also I use retumbo in my 7mm rem mag with 168 grn and it's fine as and also there's a lot of manuals listing this powder. What's the deal with these two powders and why is retumbo seeming like a pretty versatile powder??

I have found reliable load data here:

'Steve' has data there for H1000 but not for Retumbo with your particular combination. That doesn't mean it can't be done, just that he hasn't done it.

Not sure why H1000 wouldn't work with this particular combination.

As an FYI, H1000 has a slightly faster burn rate than Retumbo. If a powder is too slow, it will not produce good velocities. Conversely, if a powder is too fast, it will show pressure signs more quickly than others.

You can find a powder burn rate chart here:

Driller54,
I use H1000 in my 300wm with Berger190 grainers. I get between 2997 & 3002 fps .020 off lands with 78.9 grains of powder. When I had the bullet touching the lands, my velocity was about 2930, so I decides to give the bullet a little jump. I'm shooting a Bartlein 5r barrel in 24" length.
Start with minimum powder charge and work up. Mine gives great accuracy.
I thought about trying Retumbo, but I'm a happy camper with H1000.

I have found that bullets under 200 grns in the 300wm are at best with Imr4350, H4350, and H4831, 200-210s do great with H1000, 215-240s work good with retumbo but is usually compressed and needs a pretty long barrel.

I have been testing Retumbo in my 300WM for a while.... here's were im at ....190 gr Berger VLD, 80 grs Fed 215. 27.5' barrel.... chronographed AV 3011 ES 31 accuracy was nice, just over 15 mm at 200 yds, i have taken this load to 82 gr but it didn't achieve much more in the speed department for the additional 2 grs and seemed to give more recoil than anything. 82 grs Fed 215 190 gr Berger chrono... AV 3073 ES 63. i think Retumbo in 300 WM would work better with the heaver 210 gr Berger. H-1000 may be a better fit for the 190 gr Berger.

Howdy Driller54.
I tried H1000 in my wm and it shot okay with the 190 but i then tried IMR 4831 at 71.0 grains and it shoots them in one hole. I'm really happy with that combo.
Shot a real nice 7 x 6 bull this year and it was my first experience with the berger for hunting and i was real impressed.
