Replacement for Retumbo - 28 Nosler

Retumbo yields faster speeds over H1000 tho.
Not necessarily. Some bullet/barrel combinations run a certain velocity node regardless and the slower powder does nothing other than use more powder at the expense of barrel life. Regardless H1000 is a more stable powder. I have shot thousands of rounds with both powders. H1000 is a better powder. H1000 is also a much better powder than many of the "hot" new powders. RL33 is a prime example. It is fast with 195s in the 28 but I would never run it because it has crazy changes in different temps/conditions in some setups. That is not conducive to a great long range hunting load. In the end I could not care less what others do. H1000 is one of the best powders available.

I am loading for a friend's 28. Fought with RL 33 and tried everything to get it to shoot and it just wouldn't. Groups were terrible at every depth I tried. I thought I found a load that had potential so I came home and loaded up same charge in 3s starting from 10", 20",30",40" off lands. Went back out and shot and the velocity was 100 FPS faster with way to much pressure. This was probably a 2 hour time frame and the temp had gone from 70 to 90 degrees outside. Decided to load up a 10 round ladder with H1000 in .3 grain incriminates. All 10 shots went into about a 1.5inch group at 100 yards and showed 2 good nodes. Long story short I will be using H1000...

IMR 7977 has shown amazing promise during extreme heat and humidity tests for me.

IMR 8133 is also a new Enduron powder, and is supposed to be very close replacement for Retumbo...But better. I never liked Retumbo, and never got any good groups from it. But I am interested in trying 8133, based on my experience with 7977.

I hope you're right about all this, as I have a pound of 8133 and 7977 awaiting testing in my .300 win at the moment

IMR 7977 In my .300 Ackley, I was getting an average of 14 ES and 7 SD, on a 98º day with almost 100% humidity in the middle of an Alabama summer (d@mn-near tropical jungle climate weather). Your mileage may vary, but this is what it was testing for me using my MSv2... I'll be interested to hear your results.

Hey Mud. I'm the opposite. What have you tried it in ? I have in 300 rum and 7mm rem mag. Retumbo has worked great for me for years. Tried 8133 in rum without good results. Haven't tried in 300 wm or 7mag yet. I have a pound of 7977 but haven't tried in any cartridge yet. Thought would be good in 7 mag and 6.5 PRC. Now that I finally recieved some RL26 and N570, 7977 is going to wait for awhile. How do you guys find the time to test all these new powders ?

I tried Retumbo in 3 different 7mmRM's, 2 different 7mm STW's, a .300WM, a .300 Ackley, a .257 Wby, and I think I'm forgetting one...But can't recall as I'm winding-down for sleep to go to work in the AM. The only one that shot it ok was the .300WM, and the groups weren't really worth writing home about, IMO, but my buddy was happy with them, since it was a factory 700 SPS .300WM.

Well I'm the bearer of confirmed bad news this morning. Got the response from Hodgdon (very fast, I appreciate that). Imr 7828 is discontinued. What's out there is what's left. They advised me that 7977 is the ideal replacement and that 7828 ssc is not discontinued, which is good, but they said the ssc behaves exactly the same as 7828, the only difference being metering. I'm not so sure about that....
