Rem 700 TI won't shoot

I have an original rem700 TI in 30-06 that I can not get to shoot well. I tried some quick handloads and hornady precision 178eldx before floating the stock thinking that might fix the problem. Went back out yesterday and shot the same hornady along with some nosler 165ab factory loads and still only managed 2" groups. Should I consider replacing the stock and bedding it first or should I rebarrel with the same stock? Just thinking about options. Gonna try some 150s in it first before changing anything.

Bed the stock first. I would change out the trigger too. Sometimes with factory guns it takes a good bit of trying powder and bullet combinations before you find one that the gun likes

Factory loads its a crap shoot if one will work consistently and can get expensive trying different loads

I would start with some ladder type testing if your reloading. its sounds like a lot of work but it will make the end result better and more consistent.

4350 and 4831 with 150 or 165 grain Nosler BT have always worked well in 30-06 for me.

If none of the above works have a gun smith look at it before re-barreling.

Good point. I'll clean the crap out of it and try again. Pretty sure I cleaned most of it out the first time though.

Get some "wipe out" copper solvent and use it. Then try it on the range again. So many things can cause a 2" group but I'd start with a really clean/defouled barrel before I got into the bigger steps

Some times the question is 1) What your end goal is, (how much accuracy do you need from this rifle) 2) How committed are you to this particular firearm ($$$).

A) Clean it is good advice.
B) Let a gunsmith look it over (preferably one with a bore scope).
C) Don't forget the optic.
D) A lot of deer get killed with 2 MOA rifles, how is the cold bore shot? What is the furthest you will shoot? Nothing wrong with your bullet choices, but sometimes an old school flat base, with more bearing surface will help. Look at some of the heavier .308 bullets. You didn't mention powder, but some could choices were mentioned.

It's pretty easy to piece together a custom rifle just trying to fix the one you have. Nothing wrong with that, but cutting to what you want may be best.
If you like the stock having it correctly bedded is reasonable even if that isn't the present issue.

If you like the 30-06 (It's a great choice) fine, but if you covet something else maybe now's the time.

Try a match type bullet. Berger HVLD, Berger Hybrid, Berger Classic Hunter, Sierra Match King, Sierra Game King, Lapua Scenar, Barnes Match Burner, etc.

They will kill game just as dead as any other bullet, and are made for precision shooting.

I think the 9 out of the last 10 animals we have taken have been with "match" bullets.

I think the .30-06 shines with a 160-168 weight range myself. Your ride should have a 1:10" factory twist rate. The contour might be a bit "whippy", so a ladder test should show you an accuracy node that will give you some flexibility in speeds/charge weights to help calm things down as well.

I haven't tried a berger yet but plan to. I'm a big fan of the VLD in other rifles. Just disappointed so far that with 2 different bullets in factory loads and a quick ladder/load test, didn't give me at least decent accuracy. I did however do the latter before floating the barrel. Might have to try again now that it's floated. Planning on a very deep clean too before shooting it again.

Horrible idea. Use a hunting bullet on game. Will those bullets kill game? Absolutely. But you could shoot me in the chest with a high powered pellet rifle and I'll eventually die a slow death from the wound if I don't get help.

Use a hunting bullet designed for the game you're hunting and be done with it. A humane kill is more important than the 1/4" you might shave off with target ammo.

^^^^I'm going to try a HUNTING VLD. I've taken and seen taken plenty of game with them and trust them completely. I'm not using a target bullet if you will.

Great advice. I would personally clean **** out of it so u have a clean slate. Float the barrel, atleast bed the recoil lug. Using torque wrench ensure action screws are correct torque and move on to the scope base and then rings. To often people overlook the little things looking for bigger problems. U will get it brother, if u don't mail it to me lol. Best of luck brother

Haha she isn't going anywhere! I agree on the torque, I learned that lesson a long time ago and bought a wheeler torque wrench that I now use. I've checked the action screws and torqued the bases/rings correctly as well. Gonna clean it really well and start from scratch again. Never bedded a rifle by myself but now might be the time to try as i'm already considering a new stock anyway

If you can get a few 168 Barnes TTSX from someone (or just buy a box), and start with 53.0 of 4350, you might be surprised. Mine shoots 1/2 inch groups with that bullet- very accurate in the 30/06

I have a first gen TI in 30-06 I used for Elk. Sub MOA accuracy with Nosler 165gr. Both animals I shot at 250 and 320 yards were one shot kills

I think I have those and the powder at home. Might give them a try. What velocity are you getting?
