Rem 700 blue printed or custom

I have had several Rem actions Blue printed and built off of them . No complaints. With all the custom actions available are they any better than a Remington? Are they mass produced?
We are talking longrangehunting rifles not bench rifle . So what do the Rifle builders /Smith's here think ?

everyone is going to say custom. there's absolutely nothing wrong with a blueprinted 700 at all. my 6.5-06 is crazy accurate from a 700. but, tolerances on a custom are probably better. I think it depends on you're financial standing whether or not to get a custom.

In my opinion the real advantage of a custom is an integral rail , lug and many options . They're obviously not required but I like them for piece of mind .

I own both customs and trued Remingtons , they both shoot great . Customs offer a few options Remington doesn't, it's up to you if the price is worth it or not .

I have 3 rifles built on trued 700's. They're all very accurate and fairly cheap to build. My next gun will be built on a impact action. Buying barrels already chambered is a huge plus for me. I plan on doing a 22 creedmoor, 7mm ss switch barrel.

If you already have the action or you get one for a good price, you can save yourself 2-300 dollars and if it's done right, by one of the many qualified gunsmiths that are out there, and your build has a good quality barrel, it'll shoot just as well as a custom. I have many semi customs built of blueprinted Rem 700's and three full customs, a BAT HRPIC, Kelbly Atlas, Stiller, and I can't say that one shoots any better than the other.

I have 5 rifles built off trued R700 actions, and one with a custom action, a Lone Peak Fuzion TI.

If you have an R700 as a donor, and don't want/need all the bells and whistles, they can be just as accurate for a hunting rifle. But the cost to get all the same features as a custom is about the same as just buying a custom. Besides truing, you can add: fluted bolt, tac bolt knob, M16 extractor, TI firing pin/spring, alloy bolt shroud, side bolt stop, pinned recoil lug. All that adds up to the cost of a custom. But you don't NEED all that for an accurate R700 action. Just upgrades. A standard R700 bolt from the factory works just fine, so does the bolt stop release in the trigger, and factory ejector clip/pin. If you plan on doing all that work, just sell the R700 action and put that money into a custom.

Sell the remingtons buy custom and you will be much happier. Especially if going with a magnum, as rem riveted extractors will break at worst times

You know if I had a donor I would use it. Starting from scratch I would go custom.
Then you get into which custom and you are back to square one.
I have Curtis.. Lone Peak..Surgeon and they all seem fine to me.
Which is better who knows?

Go custom for resale alone. With introductions like the Origin and Nucleus there really isn't a reason to go buy a 700 action (less you can get it dirt cheap) sinking the money into to it to bring it up to speed of a custom and at the end of the day it's still a 700. I mean they work don't get me wrong they'll be just as accurate as a custom but it wont feel like a custom and it sure as hell wont resale like one.

I started with a 700 and built up on it and eventually sold it for a nickel on the dollar, regretted every second of it. At the time i was 18 and my dad didn't want me dropping custom money on something i might not be that interested in. 10 years later i've got everyone in the family on customs and myself have two custom builds. If you're under considerable restraints in regards to a budget a 700 or tikka will work. If not i'd spend the money to go custom. Looking at moving to an Impact myself after hunting season.

Answers a lot for me.
I have plenty of Rem actions to toy with and most of them are magnum and I have never had a scope base come loose or had one break although I have had a few ring problems and can see where a custom can save some headaches with ailments issues.
Cost wise I can get a Rem blueprinted for $250 , barrel for $400 or less
Chamber cut ... for all less than $1000
So who makes a custom action for $800 or less ?
I'm 50 years old and have two grown kids and four grandchildren so I should be blowing and going right !
Wrong God blesses me with two more late in life one now 7 and one 3 and they cost more than the first two lol
So seeing how I must keep working until 67 I'm on a budget . That being said I can sell some to cover the cost but I cannot stand to do it very often.

It is very hard to sell a custom rifle if that ever becomes the case, So when I can I prefer keeping the cost down buy using several commercial actions that do great for certain cartridges.

I have found that some aftermarket actions need some work and they normally don,t come with floor metal and magazines raising the cost even more. this doesn't make them a bad deal, just more expensive
to build. Everyone should own at least one so they could weigh one against the other.

A well blueprinted action will be as accurate as a custom action at less cost and can be sold at less of a loss if that is an issue. You will rarely
get your money out of "any" custom build, so don,t think you will/can.

The action is just one of many things/components that contribute to the accuracy of a rifle and even the best action can't make a poor barrel shoot. So pick the action you like and have it blueprinted or checked if it is a custom action but screw it on a high end custom barrel and you have a chance.

Bighorn and APR come to mind, Curtis used to have one at $750 and possibly the gunwerks action? I can't remember but for what you're wanting to do, budget considered, i'd stick with what you just mentioned because you wont get a custom barreled action for less than $1000.

I just picked up my Brother's Origin 308 barreled action today from DST. It was $1530 all said and done. Though he got the action at promotional price when it first announced. We got the origin for $730 when Bighorn was running the promotional.
