Reloader 22 in 6.5 creedmoor

Question for you extreme spread gurus.

Tested my first 10 rounds with the creed. UNBELIEVABLE accuracy. under a 1/2 MOA at 100 yards. bipod, and rear bag.

My problem is i am at 115 FPS ES. I have never had an extreme spread above 50 FPS. this has me scratching my head.

Here's my load
42.5 H4350
Federal Match 210 Primer
New Hornady Brass
Not touching lans.

Any ideas? Next trip out i am going to Turn the charge up in .5 grain increments as well as below 42.5 to see what changes. Normally thats how i tighten up ES.

Advice appreciated.

Gotcha.

Will definitely try it again. It was a cloudy day, i didnt use the diffusers. maybe that had something to do with it???

Notice: What I am about to provide is not a tested load. It is a theoretical load based on Quickload computations using standard case volume, burn rate factor, loaded length, etc. If you use any of this information you do so at your own risk. If you should decide to use this combination of components it is prudent to use good load development practices and work up to the maximum load from a lower load watching for pressure signs as you do so!

Out of curiosity I ran the combination of 6.5 Creedmoor, 130 gr Sierra GK & RL22. I did not adjust case volume or loaded length. With 48.5 gr RL22 the pressure is just over 53,000 psi, MV 2893 and case fill 104.3%. This combination coincided with a predicted node using Chris Long's table using a 24" barrel. The next node was not reachable without going way over pressure. 2 more grains puts this over pressure in Quickload.

I also ran this using the 140 gr SMK. This combination yielded similar results with 47.4 gr RL22: MV 2,847, Max Pressure 57,056, Case fill 105.8%

As you can see, these are compressed loads. Both loads are on the same Barrel Time Node of ~ 1.22 ms. When you go over these loads, pressure begins to spike quickly. These combinations are possibly do-able, but caution should be used in working up. Pressure spikes due to temperature sensitivity could cause problems with these loads.

As I said earlier, all theoretical.

What rifle are you shooting? Ruger Hawkeye?

I second what cowboy said, and check your scale for consistency for the heck of it.

I shoot R17 in my 22-250, and have chronographed the load in temps from 9 F (sat in the car overnight so both rifle, bullets, powder was ambient temp, 9F according to car's temp gauge.) to 70 F. Average was 3385 fps in 9F and 3447 fps in 70 weather. Pretty spot on with 1 fps loss per degree.

If you want to see how R-22 would stack up against other powders, here is a comparison based on barrel time of a 24" barrel. 107% loading ratio with 93% burned to gain only ~100 fps over H4350.

Code:
Cartridge : 6.5 Creedmoor Hornady
Bullet : .264, 123, Hornady A-Max Measured 26171
Useable Case Capaci: 45.878 grain H2O = 2.979 cm³
Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 2.800 inch = 71.12 mm
Barrel Length : 24.0 inch = 609.6 mm

Predicted Data for Indicated Charges of the Following Powders.

Thank you dennis & wyo7200.

I've just about pulled my hair out with my chronograph. Today it said i had an ES of 137 FPS!

I just dont buy it. I had another 1/2 MOA 5 shot group today at 100, with zero vertical shots. all were left to right. makes me believe this 137 FPS ES is just a bunch of bull.

I have never shot past 900 yards until today, we aired them out to 650 all day. Then we decided to start throwing lead!

we had a stump out at 1100 yards, took 3 tries but i finally got her!

These .264's are flat out efficient.

I think im gonna stop using the chrony, its pretty hard to believe a machine when you've got such good field data.

Final load is:

123 SST
Hornady Brass
42.5 H4350
Federal match 210 Primer
2.835 COAL

I just got 200 140 VLD'S. those should be interesting! first step into the berger bullets, im sure i will need more help!

Set up a tall target in an area where you have the room to shoot long range. Start shooting at 100 yds then move back to 200, then 300, etc. Keep the same Point of Aim (near the top of the target) and don't adjust the vertical on your scope. I would suggest 3 to 5 shot groups. This will give you the actual drop for those ranges. Use a good ballistic app, input your rifle data, altitude and weather, then keep changing the muzzle velocity until you find the one that matches the drop chart you just shot. It takes a bit of work, but you will have a good drop chart for any range and conditions after that.

last week i had a chance to do get some trajectory validation done.

i shot from 100-400. yielding a 1/2 MOA consistently at all 4 ranges. After final analysis, i am at 2835 FPS, with what i would determine a very mild ES.

The chronograph will now live its final days in the closet.:D

Just a suggestion: No sense in having a electronic piece of equipment that you have spent good money for just being a closest queen. Call the manufacturer, send it in and get it recalibrated - shouldn't cost you but one way UPS. I sent my old chrony in about every 2 years many times.

You might want to check your chrony with another proven one by setting them up back to back and then you can really give the manufacturer some solid data.

PS: After many years of getting error messages, higher-lower readings than you think you should have, ES and SD depending on the day you use it I broke down and bought a magnetospeed. No more BS - has saved many rounds of ammo and trips to the range. Nothing like getting TRUE information.
