Realistic 284 winchester velocities

I'd enjoy trying one of them Rugers out someday,
Its effectively a "bigger gun" @ COAL of 2.9xx" versus the Browning @ 2.800"

Each gun has their perks tho; The Browning short angle bolt throw and removable box mag (which is subject to preference: nice to carry spare ammo or unload but mag can get forgotten at home, ammo doesn't dump out loose from floorplate to unload)

I just finished assembling my new rifle. As the title says. I was wondering what realistic velocities for the 284 winchester in a 22 inch barrel. The specs on the rifle are a 22 inch stainless mcgowen 1-9 twist 284 win barrel on a savage short action receiver. The mag allows for Coal of 2.990. The powders I have are AA4350 , RE-17, Ramshot Hunter, IMR 4831, and Win 748.

The bullets i have are Speer 130 FB hotcors, Sierra 140 grain HPBT(hunting),Barnes 145 grain LRX, and Nosler 150 grain Ballistic tips. Also thinking about some 120 grainers. I think they would be some fast, super flat shooting rounds.

The velocities in the reloading books seem to be a little low. I'm guessing the data is slower than I expected because of the rifles the round was made for? Modern Bolt action rifles should be able to hold more pressure than the model 88's I'm sure.

I run Barnes 120gr in all my 7mm's. (Rem Mag and Lazzeroni Firebird) Barnes list 3212 with Hunter. I believe you can beat this by a lot, as they list a 129 from a 270 over 3200 with Hunter, and a 110 at 3500 with Hunter. You have a larger bore, and basically the same case capacity. I will say the TTSX perform better than std bullets 2 weights heavier out to 500 yards. But shoot flatter.

I believe you can beat this by a lot, as they list a 129 from a 270 over 3200 with Hunter, and a 110 at 3500 with Hunter. You have a larger bore, and basically the same case capacity. I dont think I can shove enough powder into the case to find another node. Not with hunter anyway. I have some 4350 and Re17 to try today.

That plant is how I managed to get to Wyoming. I got a job transfer when the original plant was still under construction! memtb

The Firebird sends the 120's out at 4050. With the 56mm scope, I "0" at 340. It is 3" high at 200, 3" low at 400 and just under 14" low at 500. I am still using the old coated (Barnes) Lazerhead Bullets in it. It's BC is .411. I'm not sure why, but I hunt with my 30-378 with 130 TTSX, mv @ 4030 instead. Barnes like to jump to the rifling, and be loaded hot. My 270's are at .075" from the lands.

4350 is some poo! Fill it to the top and nothing but unburnt powder came out. Hahaha. Hunter and the 145s look promising today actually. Averaged 2930. The 140 gamekings are only pushing 2815. I've never loaded over Saami spec. So I'm guessing I still have room to go. I haven't hit any pressure signs what so ever.

Might have been too compressed. Or too old. That can has been open for like 10 year sitting in a closet.

Ive had great luck with A4350, hadnt run it much in 284 but in 22" rifles; 6.5PRC 124HH 3180, 270WSM 125CEB 3200 have had great speeds, accuracy and low ES. Id fully expect to find good loads in 284 too.

I wouldnt discount it too quickly if theres a chance it was bad powder.

I'll get a new jug and see. I used it with the 150g BT's I knew for sure it was going to work. It did amazing in my 06
