Ramblings and Such From Hunting Coyote

I really don't know what the fur market is here this year. The price varies a lot with the color of the cat the size of the cat and if it has milk stain on the belly. Even a lot of females with no stain on the belly will have nipples sticking out and you will get docked for that so after it is stretched and dried you lay it on a good flat surface blow on the fur around the nipple and clip it off flush without cutting any fur. they said that you couldn't hardly give a coyote away this year with a top of 25.00. I will ask around and see what people are averaging for bobcats. A good large blue backed cat is still the best color over the red ones.

I ask around and the fur market isn't much to write home about for coyotes and fox. Coyote are averaging 15.00 and reds are about 5 that is for put up pelts. Bobcats at this time are going for a good price with a big span in price depending on quality, 500 to 1000 for the best. You can't count your time worth much for coyotes and red fox. Total time for either one skinning washing stretching then turning them will run close to an hour. It's a good thing to be doing it as a pleasure and not expecting to make money at it.

A lot of times when you have two coyotes that are young running with each other they will both be males, sometimes a pair of females but most times I have seen them be males. Last year I was killing 7 males to one female here so then in February a couple of young ranchers told me that they saw a pack of five coyotes running together, I told them I figured they had a female in heat and four males they laughed at me and said yeah right, the father-in-law who I had worked for, for a long time said I bet he's right. He called his friend with the helicopter and was talking with him and asked if he would fly for them the next time he was out, He was going out the next day to fly for another guy so said he would come by. They got on all five of them on a flat open snow-covered pasture and got four out of five, three males and one female the next morning one of the sons-in-law shot a lone male when they were out feeding. I have often seen three coyotes running together, normally an older female and one of the years female pups with a male, but I have seen it be a yearling male pup and helping raise the pups when they were born. A lot of times I have seen the yearling female also have a litter of pups and a couple of times both litters were born in the same den. So much of it depends on the prey base they will have bigger litters if they are well fed and tend to have another helper coyote with them, to help raise the bigger litter. I have found that the amount of available food governs the litter size more than the population of coyotes, but then the population is governed by the available food so when the food base is down you end up with fewer coyotes but as the number of predators are lower than your prey base goes up as it goes up then the predators become better fed and then have bigger litters .

Winter finally arrived here last weekend. We got about 10" of snow and then several days with lows in the single digits. It has been several years since we've had a storm like this. I was really hoping to get out and do some calling but was under the weather for several days and stuck on the couch till Friday before I felt like doing anything. Still not over it 100% but at least able to function. Friday I loaded up a batch for the 7RM then got started on the NEW project. I've been slowly over the last 3yrs gathering pieces for a 220swift. Got the barreled action and had it chambered, got all the rest of the parts and pieces here and there, many from the classifieds here lol, or whenever a good deal and my wallet aligned and allowed. Got the scope I wanted back in September and this weekend I finally got the chance to put it all together, scope mounted, and ready to go. Made my own modified case for my COAL gauge and measurents taken for 3 different projectiles. Prepped 100pcs of brass and now ready to begin the fun of breaking in the barrel, getting scope sighted in, and hopefully finding a load combo that will make me smile lol. Stay tuned lol. Hopefully everyone is staying warm and healthy and keeping up with all thier projects.

What was your barreled action? What stock are you using? Did your action come with the bottom metal, or did you get it separately? Did you put a different trigger group in it or go with what came with it for now? What scope have you decided on? I have seen some good, barreled actions for sale in recent years and think they would be good projects as money and time allow. I like most am on a limited budget and only allot a certain amount for my playing and projects. I enjoy a good project, and the time spent gathering all of it together is most of the enjoyment for me, it's like going on a hunt to find this part here and that part there, then as they all come together, fitting them to each other and seeing the end results. The breaking in and sighting in then finding the combination of bullet weight powder and seating depth for the barrel is all such a big part of the enjoyment for me. I actually enjoy the brass preparation as much as the rest of the process. And then I give it all to my son, grandson or daughter. It seems like this year there are some different strains of the existing illness's going around, like the coyotes the different viruses are adapting so they too can survive and hang around. The little bacteria are as well adapting to what we have to combat their effects on us. I am hoping that we all stay healthy and safe in our pursuit of our daily lives.

Yeah, bacteria and disease is ever changing and adapting. What I had/have was all head and throat gunk. Ears plugged and the whole bit. It sucked lol and still plugged some but it's slowly breaking up. I'm sure I know where I got it. My SIL and I had it at the same time, my wife, daughter, and friend have it now too about a week after we came down so that's obviously the incubation period. The gifts that keep on giving lol.

Now for the good stuff. My friend and I got a few of those Rem700 barreled actions from the PTG/Remington buyout sale a few years ago and this is one of those. All they were when we got them were short chambered barreled actions with a bolt in them. I'm guessing it's a VSSF model as it's stainless with a 26" fluted varmint contour barrel. PTG put a black spiral fluted bolt in it. We sent them off to Parkwest Arms to finish the chambers. LRI did most of the bolt work that was needed (PTG didn't do the best job on the bolts so LRI did an awesome job fixing those issues) GreyTan put the firing pin assembly in this one. At the time we were doing this, Remington parts weren't the easiest to find so we kinda had to get what and where we could. I put a Triggertech Primary in it. Cut down an ADL magbox for it. BDL btm metal w/spring and follower, scope rail for it came from classifieds here. I set it in a Grayboe Renegade stock. I actually got both the rings and scope on clearance at Scheels, a Athlon Midas TAC 6x24x50 mil.

It took me 3yrs to put this all together one piece at a time. I'm always keeping an eye out for the "right deal" and love finding what I'm after either here on the classifieds or at stores with a clearance tag or other manufactures with big black Friday sales! I have rich taste on a poormans budget lol. Thank God I have patience lol.

I'm hoping to run 55gr Nosler BTs or 55gr Sierra BKs in it but also have some 36gr Barnes Varmint Grenades I would like to try just because I have them. Should be an interesting journey. Honestly not sure exactly what to exspect out of it really. From what I've researched it should be in the 4k FPS area give or take but I guess I'll be finding out soon enough.
