public land softwear for GPS

Just returned from a Wyoming mule deer and antelope hunt. We used a Garmin 450t with the latest BLM chip (purchased from this web site). We were constantly harassed by "outfitters" and were told the GPS was wrong and we could not hunt. It appears out of state hunters are not welcome in Wyoming unless you pay someone $2000 to $5000 per animal. We will never hunt in Wyoming again.

Terry, here in Montana we have hunter harassment laws, we had an outfitter try that BS on us as we hunted State Trust lands and promptly turned him in to FW&P , enuff complaints and they lose their outfitters license also get a nice fine ! I would encourage everyone to report the abuse ! maybe they will think twice about what they are doing !

I spoke to Len a couple days ago regarding my earlier post and he asked me to give an update. One of the issues we were constantly dealing with was public access on public roads. The road in question was off exit 82. The road was clearly marked with signs "COUNTY ROAD". Two weeks after returning home, I finally received a return phone call from Wyoming BLM. They told me it is not a public road and the signs have now been removed. They are aware of the lack of properly mapped and marked public roads and are trying to update the current mapping to include and identify all public county roads. Stay tuned.

P.S. Great shooting Len!

Re: public land softwear for GPS - Android Phone App

I want to tell about an Android Phone app, so I will make a quick reply here and start a new topic, because I think it is important.

A man in Europe sells a $10 application that runs paper photographed maps
on your Android. It is called Viamici.

I have found that the most accurate way to find where public land ends and private land starts is to go to the local BLM office...preferably one that is as close as possible to the area you wish to hunt...and get maps. You should talk to the BLM officer, telling him what you want to do and ask him to bring you up to date on ranchers/land owners who might have recently purchased government land. It is also always a good idea to scout the territory to see if there are any owner's homes or ranches in the surrounding area. If so, tell them you will be hunting on BLM land and that you won't be trashing the place up, shooting cattle, etc. You want to get them on your side...even though you won't be (hopefully) hunting on their property.

You want to get owners on your side by at least telling them you are there and getting acquainted with them. If they hear gunshots from a hunter who has not at least informed landowners of their presence, those landowners might not know whether or not hunters are shooting BLM property or private property. It is all a matter of courtesy. I have never had a problem with landowners. I introduce myself, tell them I am an experienced hunter, member of the NRA, Varmint Hunter's Association, and that I am well aware of cattle, irrigation pipes, etc. The worst they do is to say "no," but I haven't had this experience so far.

If you happen to harvest an animal, it is always a courtesy to share some of the meat with the rancher. Often, they will be delighted and it will be easier for them to welcome you back the following year.

I just purchased an HTC android a couple of weeks ago and the gentleman that sold it to me downloaded a Montana parcels app for me. It shows actual satalite pictures and you can double tap on a parcel of land and it will give you the owner, size of parcel etc. So far seems to be pretty accurate. Best part is it is FREE

The SD cards can be mailed in and an update done for a fee of $20 including return shipping. The map data itself is updated a couple times per year.

By contrast, BLM paper maps are only updated every 4 (?) years.

Late last fall I realized the Garmin 350Nuvi I have for the truck has a SD card slot AND that if you turn it off while pluged in it will chargelightbulb I dont need to buy another Garmin!!!! So I ordered a Card from Len.
Well yesterday we decided to check out a prairie dog town we found a few years back. We have always been puzzled by the fences and where confused trying to use the paper BLM maps to try to find the property lines.
The Card packin Nuvi made it a snap!!!!! The dang fences ran right down the middle of the BLM and in some places there where no fences between the BLM and privet????
The bad news is the prairie dogs where dumb enough to expand thier town closer to the road so ever tom, dick and harry that drives by see's them......There where three SUVs parked along the road shootin dogs before the pups where out.......Its legal= just foolish
Anyway the 350 Nuvi works great in the truck and will hold a charge for 3-4 hours so it aught to work just fine for what we need, Now all we take is the Delorme WY map with us and leave the old warn and tore up BLM maps at home:D

Do you guys have a Garmin GPS that you think works better than others with your maps?
