Starting to reload for 30-06 from scratch. What are the proven powders/powder charges and bullets/bullet weights for this caliber?

SAAMI spec chamber, 1 in 10 twist, 26" barrel.

Thanks.

~ 57gr of H4350 under a 175-180gr bullet of your choosing is a great choice. I use 175gr SMKs and 180gr Partitions with Winchester brass and primers, and I get fantastic accuracy.

58-59gr of H4350 under a 165 bullet is supposed to be a good combo as well, but for me wasn't nearly as accurate as the above.

I have great luck with 50gr of varget and 168gr berger vld's and 165 nosler Ab's with cci 200 primers and rem brass.

57g IMR 4831 and 180g Nosler Balistic Tip. Has worked well in every rifle I tried it in as a generic load. Be careful, could be on the hot side.

IMR4350, with a number of bullets imy favorites are the Nosler 150gr Partition and 150 gr Ballistic tip. I use the CCI BR primers.

My hunting load in my 22" barreled 30-06 is
55gr H4350 w/168gr Barnes TSX @ 2720fps.

does it have a custom barrel? if so it should shoot EVERYTHING real good. your big groups should be .5". are you shooting targets, elk, deer?

Yes, it has a custom barrel. Use is for hunting. So far it is shooting well, but I was wanting some good starting points for loads in this caliber in order to hopefully not have to peer into my reloading manuals and wonder which bullet/powder combination would be best to start with. There are literally hundreds of combinations (if not more), and I really want to get to the "best" load for my rifle as fast as I can.

Seems to me that there would be certain powders and bullets that are better than others for this caliber. And there are those that should just be avoided. The reloading manuals dont really tell you this in any detail.

it should shoot everything real good. and it is not like a 6.5-284 where you only get 1000 rounds out of the barrel. i would use re-19 or h4350 and 165 baltip, 165 horn btsp or a 168 balisticsilver tip; lapua brass. 210m primer. wlrm for cold weather. for elk maybe a 180. same powder. no need to hot rod it . the 30-06 will do it. other powders and other primers should do just as good. just my preference.

165 - 168 gr bullets - 57 gr IMR4350 Fed215 primer
180 gr bullets - 60 gr RL19 Fed215 primer
200 gr Accubond - 60 gr RL22 Fed215 primer

Thanks this is great! One problem I dont got a press yet can any one tell me what brands to stay away from I been looking ta that RCBS rock chucker

Just loaded 54.5 grains RL 17 (yes the WSM powder) behind a Sierra SPBT 180 grain bullet, CCI 200 primer, and win brass. Could easily go 55+ grains RL 17 in case capacity, but this is a start. Anybody used RL17 in 30-06 before?. Gonna give it a go in a factory rifle in a day or two. Might be interesting to see the accuracy and chrono data.
