PROS:
CONS:
- There's no doubt about which way your scent in being blown.
- A strong wind can mask the sound of your approach.
- You have a better idea of where the elk are (hunkered down).
- If you are successful and need to leave quarters in the field for later pickup, it is much harder for scavengers to find your quarters in a strong wind.
CONS:
- Wind chill.
- Much harder to make a long range wind call in a strong gusting wind.
- A strong gust can potentially knock you down while hiking, especially when you're crossing an area with difficult footing.
- If you're carrying a pack with a large cross-sectional area the potential for you to be blown down increases dramatically as the cross-sectional area of your pack increases.
- Strong wind blows junk in your eyes.
- Increasing danger while hunting in wooded areas of trees being blown over on top of you.
- There is always the potential for a strong wind to get much worse. Once every couple of years in my area we get winds with gusts approaching 100 mph.
- If it starts snowing you could suddenly get markedly reduced visibility i.e. blizzard.
- It is physically much more tiring to hike in a strong wind.
- Much harder to glass without some sort of support.
- Sometimes it's quite difficult to glass because strong winds can cause your eyes to tear.
