Wondering about prefits.. Id like to build a new rifle and stuck between another magnum sized for LR hunting or a small LR target/ deer rifle. Have kids growing up and would like a rifle they could shoot also, current rifles are a bit big for them. So im curious about having 1 that I can swap from a 6MM to 6.5/7MM. Anyone have any insight on this? How's the precision after swapping around barrels? Any tips, do's or dont's? Tools needed at home to swap? Perfect world would be a 6BR or similar for practice/kids/deer then swap to a 6.5 or 7mm for LR deer/elk.

I have a defiance action with two 6.5cm barrels on heavy one light and two 6cm barrels one heavy one light. It's perfect for my kids. Targets they use the heavy barrels and prefer the 6cm. Hunting screw on a light barrel.

It depends on your action. If your doing what @akdad has, it is pretty straight forward. If your action is designed for the 6MM BR, it might not be able to accommodate 6.5 CM. If your action is designed for the 6.5 CM, you might have some feeding issues.

Lots of good choices out there today that accept prefits. Maybe too many LOL. Anyway, just make sure action length works for both calibers and you can also have a standard and mag bolt to run say, a 6 Creed and a 6.5 PRC or 7 SAUM on basically the same gun. I will warn you though - chances are good you will still wind up with multiple complete rifles

Or you could build a short action with good adjustable stock to fit everyone and share

I started with a Savage short action that I had a smokeless ML barrel for deer hunting and the original 243Win barrel for general shooting and coyotes. After the second time I did the swap, I decided it was a PIA and built a separate 243AI and left it in the ML configuration. It's doable, but if it's not a shouldered prefit you need to set and verify the headspace each time. Remove and remount the optic. Got half a dozen used Rem700 actions and made a stable of prefit rifles, happy with every one of them.

For the kids, I built a couple on chassis so I could use adjustable AR-style stocks for length-of-pull. My son's first deer gun was an AR pistol in 6.5 Grendel because it was simply the easiest way to build something with the right length of pull and small size/weight he could handle. One could cut down a stock but they grow so fast.

It's uncanny. Some girls/women can just naturally shoot the heck out of a pistol or rifle.

I have a Remage prefit. It's a Criterion varmint 6.5-06 barrel on a Mack Bros. action. I put it in a chassis. I use it as a long range rig and it shoots very well. I don't do any barrel switching with it though.

I certainly don't want to highjack the thread but I'm sure the op is wondering this as well. For those of you that do swap, how do you get the barrels to index exactly the same every time so headspace stays the same? I thought about possibly using a set screw through the barrel nut. Or perhaps this is where a shouldered prefit shines?
