Seems like everywhere Iook is a fairly big cloud of pessimism about darn near everything, even extending to the extraneous like this long range hobby.
Figured I'd make a thread about some of the things over the years that actually excited or left an impression in the shooting sports over the years.
Premise being, I'm fair to middling at hitting fish in the head with sticks and slightly better at knocking rust chips off old boats. Have almost zero industrial or creative capacity, as such every now and again a product jumps out at me and really leaves an impression.
First one would probably have been getting behind a heritage Premier 3-15 scope. At the time premium was a us optics scope that looked like a high school welding project, the nxs line was still almost brand new and more scopes were adjustable objective than not. Heck we had a thread a week about the various vudoo methods to get a vx3 with external knobs to track... At any rate, someone had one on the firing line at a local range and he was letting just about everyone let off a few rounds behind it. I'd never felt clicks like that with glass like that before, nowadays it's specs are fairly common. But at the time it seemed really special, stands to reason as it's inflation adjusted price is squarely in zco range.
Second was a pre Dakota buyout nesika bay action. Probably late 90s and about the only other custom action I'd ever felt was a bat heavy bench rest action. Every other bolt I'd ever felt was from the big name brands and box stores or early 1900s sporterized surplus. These days it's a smorgasbord of crisp slick custom actions, but at the time it really stood out.
Last is probably the leica crf series. Consumer electronics became ubiquitous a little before my memory, but I remember how many range finders the guys who took me hunting went through. Get a few solid bounces and then nothing when you needed it, musta gone through a pile that could bounce off a barn but good luck on game. Was probably college age when tried my first leica, think it was an 800. Bounced off everything, and even sent a few past 8. Eventually got my own 1600 and it's been used for several batteries and the rubber on the button is worn through. Have one for the boat and one for hunting now.
Can think of a few more, but figured It would be neat to hear what product you first tried and were absolutely impressed with?
