Precision 7mm08 ammunition for deer

Hmm a Remington barrel on a Mauser action? So is this a Rem barrel that was taken off another rifle? The Mauser action was it a Mil surplus? Sounds like a budget build and maybe you will not ge getting very good accuracy ever. That is my guess and wondering if I am in the ball park on your build?

If you can find it, the HSM ammo with 140 Berger VLD's is very accurate out of all the 7mm-08's we've tried them in.

I am curious, have you fired other factory ammo thru your gun and if so how'd it shoot for you? I really kind of shocked that the 139 Whitetail load shot that poorly...?

Remington core lokt shoots pretty good, I can't find any though

It may just be the cartridge since 7mm08 was created by Remington but it says Rem. 7mm08 on the barrel. It was re-built about 15 years ago by a local gunsmith who is well known in my area for his quality of work so I don't think he would have put a barrel off another gun in fact if my memory is correct I believe he ordered the barrel brand new. It wasn't cheap to get it rebuilt, about 6-700$ back then. I don't know if it was mil-surplus, it has a nazi swastika on the action under the scope mount so maybe it was surplus maybe used in action. My dad traded a guitar amp for it back in the 70s so there's no way of finding out. I can get pretty good accuracy with core lokts (.75-1"ish at 100) but I haven't been able to find any of those in 7mm08 since the shortage.

According to the Berger Twist Rate Stability Calculator a 140 gr. bullet should be stable in your rifle down to about 10° F. I've used 120 gr TTSX in my 7-30 Waters at 2400 to kill aoudad with no issues, so out of your rifle they should be devastating.

I believe the Swastika stamping went away as the war progressed. Sounds like the action was early WWII German production, likely a nice action. I have had good luck with Federal Fusion loads in other calibers. Keep looking and good luck.
