Powder blend

Anyone ever blend rifle powder? If so how did it go. I know ammunition manufacturers blend powders to achieve there needs and bullet speed for proprietary purposes.
I blend different lots of the same powder. Varget has been hard to get. I recently had 3 one pounders all from different lots, so I blended them together and put back in the jars.

Something humorous..,.,When I started shooting hi/power I loaded up some 2495 for the Garand. The powder had just got into the US. Well when I'd touch it off it would throw a orange fire ball out the muzzle that was really visible. This one club member comes over to me "what are you shooting" So I tell 'em about 44gr of 2495 & 3gr of Red Dot, I guess that's what makes the fire ball. Well he starts running back and forth on the firing line. Being Tom was gullible. Everyone got a good chuckle! Did I actually mix the two powders?
Oh hell no! But the OP brought the story to mind.

I shoot BPCR (Black Powder Cartridge Rifle). I have seen some load data using a small charge of smokeless powder and then a charge of black powder, called duplex loads. Supposedly helps ignite the black powder better. Would I try it. NO!!! I like my ugly face as it it, no need to change my looks. Plus I like my rifles, don't need to "modify" them, even though my rifles are capable of shooting straight smokeless loads. I have blended different lost of the same smokeless powder though.

One of the first safety rules of reloading is "never mix different powders" no matter how similar their burn rates/properties. Says that somewhere in all of my reloading manuals😳
"Never mix any two powders regardless of type, brand, or source.
Never substitute any smokeless powder for Black Powder or its substitute."

Smokeless Muzzleloder shooters use duplex loads all the time with no issues. Sometimes the slower powder wont ignite reliably because the bullet doesn't create enough tension in the barrel. You can load these with just one finger on top of the rod. So a small amount of a faster or more easily ignited powder is put in first. I did it for yrs with my flintlock hunting in PA. I used 10 grains of 4 f black powder and on top of that put 70 grains of pyrodex and then a patched round ball. Worked great. On the smokeless build i do now they use h4198 by itself and push 300 gr bullets @2800 fps. If you tried to lower the powder charge to shoot them at 2200 or so they wont fire most times. Therefore a different powder or a duplex load would work better. Personally i see no reason to even try it with a centerfire rifle.
