Pics of your first deer?

Not mine. I took my nephew out to shoot his first deer. Due to terrain, shortest distance for a shot is 235 yards. We practiced with water jugs before the opening weekend, thus I am comfortable with him taking the shot. I asked him to high shoulder shoot so we don't have to track the deer into the adjacent ravine. He did very well.

I didn't even carry a rifle on opening day, took the video through the spotter with my Android phone

No pictures, no one to share or enjoy it with. Climbed to the top of stand turned and set down, looked up to see a North Fla. 6 point looking at me from 28 yards away in chest high dog fennels. A fast shot from a Rem. 7600 .308 Remington 150 grain corelock on the third jump he went down. The whole hunt took a year a half for that 1 minute hunt.
I am not letting history repeat itself, my son with his whitetail a double beam 9 point, using my cz 550 in .308

Hey folks! I'm generally a lurker here, just living vicariously through your wisdom and experience.

I moved to western NC about 4 yrs ago. Not many deer in my area, so I hunt elsewhere. This year, a friend got into bow hunting and I spent a lot of time hunting with him. No luck during bow season for either of us. Last Monday was the gun opening day and I wound up shooting my first NC deer. Not my first deer, but the first in my new home state. I hunted alone, and drug it out alone. It was guite an adventure!

Sorry no picture.
1964, had received my NRA hunter safety certificate 2 years before and had been hunting with my father but not shooting other than small game. The hunt was in the high Sierras and started hiking out of camp before dawn. Around 10am, sat down on the side of a 30 degree slope to eat my apple. Looked up and across the canyon a deer stood in the timber. About 250 yards and a downhill shot. Dropped the apple and set up for a string position shot due to the steep hill. Rifle held 1 in the chamber and 2 in the magazine. First shot. I was sure I missed because the deer just stood there. 1 more and he started to walk slowly. Long story short, after 4 shots, one of which came out of my cartridge holder, he dropped.
When dressing the deer after the hike down and back up, three of the 4 were right behind the shoulder. Learned a lot about how tough mule deer can be from that experience.
A lot or years later and many hunts, just goes to show you have to be ready for the unexpected.
Will never forget that hunt as long as I live. Humbling.

No pictures of the deer but I still have the rifle that did it. Marlin 336a 30.30 Bought it used in 1969 for $75 when I was 12, cut my last yard in the dark to get the last little bit of money needed to go pick it up, dad took me up that very night. I refurbished it in 1986. First deer I killed with it was 1973 in hickory run state park, Pennsylvania, an 8 pointer. I remember every detail of that hunt.

My first year hunting was 1983, and managed to shoot this nice 9-point at first light on opening morning at the family farm in northern Minnesota. Proudly wearing my newly acquired hunter's safety patch on my jacket, this picture was taken with me and my Dad for the local newspaper. I'm holding the rifle (brand new in 1983) I used that day, a Marlin 336CS in .30-30, before I added a Weaver 2.5-7 scope. I still have the rifle today, and it's got a few miles (and wear) on it along with a ton of memories. My son used the same rifle to shoot his first deer, and his best friend also used it to shoot his first deer. Hopefully some day I'll get a chance to give a grandchild an opportunity to use it on their first deer as well.

I came across a gem today and thought I'd start a fun thread. I didn't hunt till 2000 when a friend showed me the ropes right after I got out the Marines.

It has been soooo long ago that I shot my first deer at 8yo that we had to scratch the record on a cave wall.....no cameras invented yet.....:) :) :)

Having trouble posting text with picture. Anyway the picture I posted was in the late 70 s and that was my first day deer hunting in Southern Alberta. The rifle was a pump 30-06 Remington. My luck has changed over the years and not for the better.lol
