I came across a gem today and thought I'd start a fun thread. I didn't hunt till 2000 when a friend showed me the ropes right after I got out the Marines.

I am not sure there were cameras back then when I took my first deer. Anyway, what is up with the partial skinning of the back legs on that deer? Surely, that is not an illinois thing since I hunt up there every year and have never seen that before.
It was to hang on the gambrel hoist system in that shop. Could roll them straight into the walk-in fridge.

I don't have a picture but I started hunting with my father when I was five and took my first deer when I was seven hunting with my late grandfather with a 20 ga shot gun and buck shot.my first deer was a 75 lb doe in SC.only reason I still know the weight of the doe is I still have the news paper clipping from were my parents had ot put in the news paper.that was 20 years ago and I've been hooked on hunting whitetail ever since

No picture, first successful deer hunt I was either 13 or 14, shot a little spike buck aroud 220 yards or so with a neighbours borrowed Remington 7600 (I think that's the number) .30-06 pump gun. This is the gun that got me hooked on anything long range. I learned to shoot, after BB guns and .22s, on dads iron sighted .30-30. Getting to use a scoped .30-06 was exhilarating after that. I was addicted to the fireball, the chest thumping kaboom, getting punched in my scrawny teenage shoulder shoulder by something that hit me like it meant it 🤪, the comparatively laser-like trajectory, and the horsepower present there. Felt like wielding the hammer of Thor.

Don't have any pictures but it was in 1978 in Well Tannery Pa. I was 18 my second year of deer hunting. I was standing with my dad coldest day of the year. I had a Remington Bdl deluxe in 30-06 he had a old Winchester model 94 in 30-30. Shot the deer at about 30 yards he didn't know what hit him. First and only time my dad went hunting with me. But I remember everything about that day. The deer was a four point with inside measurement of 12 to 13 inches.

Started hunting at 18. Didn't have anyone to show me the ropes. School of hard knocks and conversations around the wood stove with seasoned hunters taught me a lot. Hunted hard 2 years for my first harvest which was a doe. Last day of muzzleloader in Indiana and I swear it was as cold as I have ever been in a stand. Remember that hunt like it was yesterday.

Partial skinning up from the hock while on the ground works way better than trying to start skinning while hanging, it keeps tons of hair from going on the meat. I learned that from professional butchers at Dicks Double Wrap in Missoula 40 years ago
