Looking for an affordable packable down jacket that actually packs down to a manageable size. Taking a trip where Ill need a light jacket a few days but mostly will be sitting in the luggage. Not looking to break the bank but want to try to save as much space as I can and would prefer a hood.

I bought a KUIU down jacket for stand sitting. It does pack (compress) very small but I never found it to be warm enough. Even with their down vest under it, it just wasn't sufficient. I think you can get a lot more bang for the buck elsewhere.

I got the brown version of the link below before an elk hunt in the Gila this past December for exactly the reasons you mentioned. I did very well there down to calm single digits moving. Sitting was down to 30s. I recently used it in upper 20s and windy in the desert. It blocks the wind, but I like it better with a rain jacket over the top for windy. Let something else block the wind and let it keep in the heat.

The Brooks down sweater from first lite has become my go to puffy. It packs down and fits in a water bottle sized compartment in my pack and is very warm. Scheels usually has great deals on first lite stuff. Especially in the cipher camo.

I don't want to even admit how many dollars I've spent on small packable jackets.... my favorite is a mountain hardwear ghost whisper hooded. I've worn one out as has my wife's, even with near daily use it took time for them to start loosing down and tearing. Can often find them for 140 to 180 dollars in terrible last year colors from the various outlet places.

My favorite synthetic was a mountain hardwear compressor, it packed as small as the ghost whisper was minimally heavier and did better when wet. I've had 5 since 2015, my first 3 took over 5 years to wear out being worn under rain gear about 6 months a year. My favorite jacket so far.
