Out of the Box Accuracy

This is perhaps the first time that I have spoken up for a product. Savage box rifles definately get my thumbs up. Very good semi customs can be built upon them as well. Many people use them as an intercontinental travel rifle in situations where the health and possesion of a custom is sketchy at best. shippers alone account for more rifle destruction than any force on earth. However when it comes to true custom rifles Savage is a guaranteed looser, there is no-way a smitty can get the price out of one to pay for the time investment. but they are truly the king of bang for the buck (dollars)

Ken i beg to differ with you on custom rifles. I hear ya when you say they are the king of out of the box rifles, but the fact is every year in compatition shoots those plain out of the box Savages beat(yes beat) hundreds of $5000.00 custom rifles. Savage (box Savages) have won so many first place compatition matches that i could not count them any more. More than any other brand rifle on the market including custom rifles.

This takes some beating for out of the box accuracy.

We love the Savage rifles for out of the box 1/4" groups in most of the varmint or long range rifles. 2 new Savage LRPV shot 1/4" and less with pet loads from our files, then we worked up loads for each rifle and get 1/8" in the 22-250 cal. My new F/Class 6.5-284 shot 3/8" out of box with cheap weaver 2 piece base and a Nikon dot scope with another persons loads. My new Stevens/Savage .308 shot 5/8" out of box, then dropped trigger pull to 2 lbs and got clover leaf hole with three shots. My Savage with douglas XXX barrels always shot in the 3's until this year with some new load data and can shoot one hole. Never had to do much with the factory savage. Also my Savage LP 22-250 was the worst ever at 3/4", moved pillers up slightly to touch receiver and now 1/8" to 1/4" all the time.

Not slamming other brands, but I never got that type of performance out of my Remingtons, Browning, Winchesters. Oh they all shot good, but never shot Savage good without tuning and lots of it.gun)

Savage has definitely come a long way in their product and accuracy. I remember my dad selling the early Savages. But to say they have won more events than any other factory produced rifle is a bit of a stretch. Understand I am an avid Savage fan. I built a semi custom rifle off of a Savage action, but when wins come to mind, Remington has the lead right now. I can't even fathom the number of Remmy actions that have been tweeked and tricked out that has won competitions. Savage new line is definitely the new winning kid on the block, but Remington has paid their dues.

By the way, Savage out of the box is the way to go. Shot a .233" 5 shot group at 100yds with a hand load prone. Factory rifle, no tweaking at the time. Mod 12 VLP is the model I own. Shot many .5" groups with factory fodder.

I don't have much experience with the other rifles, but I recently purchsased a Savage 10CFPLE with a HS Precison Stock and I am amazed at the accuracy. Here are a few pics of my first range session . This is the second group fired at 100 yards with Federal 165gr Game Kings. This is my first post so I hope the pics show up. I can't wait to see what it will do with reloads. Again this is from my first range session.

I enjoy reading about happy shooters, That is the goal of rifle manufacturers and smittys. I would like to see some long range targets. 100yd. vs. LR shooting is like comparing drag racing to nascar racing. The excitement is that there is more going on between 900-1100 yds. than there is from 0-900yds. my own opinion is to not even care what a rifle will shoot below 300yds. on a calm day. The 100yd. bench rest crowd has become so prevalent that they are the most commonly accepted standard for accuracy. There is a lot of short range common and good science and thoughts But most of it will be walked away from and the longer and further I shoot the more imperative it becomes that the box rifle goes to a gunsmith. It would be cool to see someone show up at a nascar event with a funny car but there luck will end at turn 1

How about 605yds through the head of a groundhog on a stock Savage barrel, stock, and action in 300WSM with hand loads?

You have the Idea. now bump it up a bit, like the 12 yr old kids shooting Dad built customs -- the kids in the 1800 yd squirel clubs. Some of the varmint magazines have more than few photos. 650 yds. is good but its still throwing rocks. just my opinion.

Well we are still talking stock rifles, not custom rifle. Would be cool to shoot a gopher that far though!gun)

I am still talking inexpensive builds based off of a good platform. good inexpensive platform. So here we have a good dollar sense start. People start with a better stock, upgrade the barrel, as time goes by there isn't much left of the origional boxer. People keep upgrading. Of people interested a lot will come to the wrong conclusion that gunsmithing gains cost an arm and a leg or wont help. Reasonable gunsmithing costs are not an issue. One fellow told me he couldn't afford it, I laughed and asked if his savings account had a chopper in it that automaticaly shredded his money whenever it got over a couple of inches high. When people in general (NO NAMES ATTACHED ) Just in general start saying that a boxed rifle brand outshoots good smithed ones ( happens on occassion ) That statement pretty well throws a challenge, because it simply is not true. People shooting squirrels at 650yds. is one of coolest things a guy can read But what happens to a person if they are missinformed and drop out because they feel that they have hit the top of the pinnacle and get bored just when they should be getting started. a box rifle is a cost conscious way to begin, absoluteley not a place to stop.

I like factory rifles...I live in virginia where the maximum shot is 300 yards.. lol I love to read about long range shooting, and all these sub-moa groups at 600-1000 yards, and I would love to own a long range rig. But those factory guns are more than enough for deer and bear. I have never been a target shooter and will never be a target shooter. I kill to live and live to kill. :D I cant wait to buy my next factory rifle. Hopefully a browning.

you cant gowrong with a browning. I've got a stainless stalker in 300win.mag with a boss and I've shot under an inch at 200. I'm with you on the hunting gun issue and to me that's as good as I need.
