Older 700 Holland Trigger Spring Fix

So I had a rant about the crappy trigger in my son's older 700 ADL 30-06 that I shot a pretty good group with 180HH. I tried to replace with a Timney but it wouldn't fit without major Dremel work. So I remembered I had the Holland trigger bolt stop kit with trigger pull replacement spring. Pulled out trigger pull weight adjustment screw but HOLY COW the original spring was corroded in place. Sure part of problem. Added drop of Rem oil just because it was handy. After a lot of probing with small punch, I was able to get it to release and come out. Replaced with the Holland spring and IMMEDIATE improvement in being able to adjust trigger pull weight. Set at 2.75 and broke pretty much there repeatedly. Much crisper after over travel adjustment etc. Not a Triggertech by any stretch but decent enough for now with a cheap fix from Holland using their Trigger Bolt Stop spring kit. So I will hit range and find out I screwed up a really good shooting rifle?

BTW, this also the perfect time to replace the bolt stop spring, buff the bolt stop with a Dremel buffer so it is smoother and doesn't hang up in slot and clean the bolt stop slot thoroughly for smooth and frictionless movement of the bolt stop.

Never been a fan of just swapping out for aftermarket springs. There's a huge difference in quality of the internals of the aftermarket triggers when compared to what the factories make.

If the OEM700 trigger is not giving you problems I would agree but these are OLD triggers did not perform the way I wanted. Heck I tried to put in Timney but not enough spacing without major work. The spring did improve performance but I guess time will tell. Then again this rifle is not shot often by my son. I look at Holland and PTG as being pretty reputable in their parts.

I'd be more worried about why the old spring was so corroded in the housing.
Did you remove the trigger from the action and disassemble and clean the trigger, sear, and connector? I would at least recommend flushing it out with brake cleaner or lighter fluid.
A properly adjusted Rem700 can be a great trigger.

It was my son's rifle that he dropped off and hadn't been used it years. I did exactly that but still was crapped up. When I pulled the trigger adjust screw out is where the crap was. I also use acetone and small SS container and let trigger soak. Amazing what comes out. The OEM spring is a lot heavier than the Holland spring and I have found it makes the trigger pretty nice to adjust. I explained the trigger cleaning process and maybe it won't happen again. The bolt stop spring is a lot heavier so it snaps it lot nicer too.

And yep, the older Rem triggers are pretty decent to adjust.

ShortGrass. Holland has good products. I use OEM and high quality aftermarket stuff in my shop. Wolff springs are the highest quality springs I know of.

As for the old trigger slot not allowing a new trigger in. very interesting. I have converted 721's, 722's and 725's from that really hellish trigger to 1980's OEM triggers, Timiney, Trigger Tech, and Trigger Basix with little fitting other than cutting the 700 cut on the right side of the rear tang.
Maybe I am missing something on your post.

Nope, this older Timney would not fit in a Magpul 700 either unless I Dremeled the trigger guard. This is the only Timney I have ever had any problem with. I need to compare numbers to double check against other Timney 700 triggers. It fits into receiver fine but it seems to be wider than other ones. Head scratcher for me. Or maybe I should say head polisher?

ya', but the internals of those old Walker triggers are trashy compared to "custom" that are cut with EDM. A lotta' shake in some of those Walker triggers, the trigger lever itself will wiggle back and forth. The internals (the trigger lever itself and the sear) appear to be punched out. Look at 'um close, the difference is obvious between , say,,, a Shilen Trigger (which is the same design) and a Walker. If you like 'um, great. But don't tell me they're better than sliced bread, I been doin' this for too long to believe that! "bout the only thing I use made by Holland is their bolt handles. Anything else, I have found other comparable quality parts at a better price. I will agree, though,,, Wolff makes good springs. There's more to a good trigger than just the spring.
