Ok, Hornay, one of my favorite companies did it again.-A New Mono on the Market

Came across this last night.

Hornady seems to have recognized the trend towards mono's and has come into the market with their own new offering.

I've been a really big fan of Hornady for better than 30 years since I first started shooting their varmint bullets when I was hiding and doing predator control and shot their Interbond, in my opinion the best bonded bullet in the US for as long as they were manufactured.

Once I get things set up again I'm going to have to try their CX bullets.

If nothing else I'll have to give the 190gr 30 cal and 250gr .375's a ride just for fun.

When did they discountinue the Interbond? I saw some 7mm 154gr on sale online about 3 months ago.

The only Mono that I can compare apples to apples (without doing research, because... lazy) is the 6.5130 MTH from Cutting Edge. I've shot a BUNCH of these out of a 6.5 WSM. You're looking at a 40 point jump in BC with the MTH over the CX.

Now, i'm not knocking Hornady as I feel they are a great company with some really good product. I'll just have to stand behind my previous statement that the published BCs are a bit off-putting.

Here's my opinion on them:

I watched their video. They start out confirming that with solids you need a high impact velocity, so that's at least good to hear them admit lol. The rest though, to me, is just 4 guys sitting around talking about exploiting a demand and marketing the crap out of it. It all sounds great, but when you simply look at the product and what it is and the BC's… I'm sorry but they haven't really made any new breakthrough like they claim. It's, if anything, just a slightly enhanced GMX. Good on them for trying, but Hornady has a heck of a marketing department and a reputation for making every new product appear to be cutting edge and breakthrough technology. I'll admit it works really well on a lot of people lol, no disrespect to them intended either.

Honestly, you can only get so much from the typical copper bullet since it doesn't have the density like lead. Any solid with an actual decent BC is going to be really long because it just has to be.

That length is going to do two things: first, it's going to require a fast twist in order to achieve proper gyroscopic stability in flight. Second, it's also going to reduce terminal performance. A bullet that is unbalanced as far as length vs diameter will result in more sectional density, and more penetration and less expansion. That even goes for lead core bullets, but it's exacerbated with most copper bullets.

Im sure that's one reason they kept them at the lower weights. They wanted to be able to cater to the typical factory rifle twist rates, keep weight lower so speed could be higher, and keep the length down for terminal performance as well.

They still stay 2000fps is the minimum impact velocity, which I personally would be more confident not dipping below 2200fps, and they also say that they'll only add about 100 yards more in range capability compared to the GMX.

I wish them luck and anyone using them, but they're definitely not for me. There are simply better copper bullet options out there. That said, the factory offerings might be a decent option for the non-reloading California hunter.

I will be honest and haven't bought them in a while. But if I remember didn't they have some crap about the whole covid mandate. I did t read up so I may be way off but sounds like they got to much flack or caught lying and walked it back? I am really trying to only support companies that have my beliefs. Man I want a come so bad but it's been a long time after they went woke.

Not officially discontinued just so far back on the back, back, back burner I can't count on finding them anymore.

I only found out for sure today when I called that they hadn't been "officially discontinued" but there was no date currently scheduled for any new production.

Every company with 100 or more employees was basically on the chopping block with the new Covid Mandates until SCOTUS shot them down last week.

No doubt state and local mandates have been crippling a lot of manufacturing as well.

One of my two best friends ordered a new pickup 8 months ago and they still could not get it produced for him because of some stupid chip they were lacking so he finally gave up and bought one off of a lot last week.

Hornady woke? No, not close. Not that I've ever seen.

Same bunch of nice folks and their kids that I've been doing business with for 40 years and the same attitudes.

Actually as part of the improvements they are using a new copper alloy and have changed the geometry inside and out for higher BC's and better expansion.

They recognized the GMX had some fairly serious issues and good on them for spending the time, money, and resources to put out a better, improved product.

No, neither they nor anyone else is going to produce a mono that performs the same way traditional cup and core or bonded bullets do because physics and chemistry just won't allow it. They are however doing their best to maximize the performance inside of those parameters and I applaud them for it.

I can't give enough credit however to the small manufacturers that keep driving the bigger guys to innovate to better serve us either.

I'm not impressed. They will do the same chit they did with the Shemoor and hype it up to the point of unrealistic expectations. (Ex: my shemoor will kill an elk at 5000 yards, drt!)

I will quietly laugh when people start trashing them because they glazed over the speed for effective killing part... they will have people shooting heavy for caliber monos and wondering why they aren't getting performance at 1800fps and below.

Who knows maybe I'm wrong but if I were a betting man....

case in point !
where's the bc improvements ?
was the GMX bc claim over the top ?
likely, most manufacturers claims were

so why continue the charade of the super slick CX bullet, nothing like it in the world bs ?

They are an improvement for sure, but not to the extent the claim.

And yes, competition is great and it's what ultimately gives the consumer more and increasingly better options. I'm not at all saying they've wasted their time and shouldn't have made it, but it's surprising to me that a company with their resources couldn't have come out with more of an improvement than they did. It's a step in the right direction, but it's no breakthrough. I just feel like they could have done better is all. I have nothing against Hornady. I use a lot of their products.

I'm sorry but it wasn't Hornady peddling that garbage, it was people that bought Needmore's and realized they had manhood issues to address once they started shooting them.

Oh I didn't say it's some great breakthrough, just an overall improvement and definitely a step in the right direction.

I'll have to see if I can get my hands on a box or two and shoot some bit hogs with them. Hogs make about the best test bed I know if when it comes to terminal ballistics.
