NULA - 300WSM - Recoil ?

did you buy it?

I had an ULA in 7RM that I shot 175 partitions at elk with. The recoil really wasn't that bad. A Kimber Montana 300wsm 8400 was much worse with 180 accubonds. I think those stocks that Melvin uses in the ULA/NULA soak up a bunch of recoil. And if you load down to starting or even middle loads with a bullet like a 150 partition/accubond, you should be very happy.

Varmint- not sure where that price is, i am not familiar with the nula enough. except i know he makes good guns and stocks. if you reload, load some 150, or 168 for deer around 2900 to 3000. if you hunt elk change to 168 bonded at 3000. when hunting i generally do not shoot all that much for the recoil to be problem

varmint- prabibilty of an accurate load : my brother and i both have 700 ti in 300 rsaum both will shoot as good of groups as our senderos. at 100 yards and 200 yards. they are not target rifles ; they are carry guns. not heavy loads, his is only 2850, and mine 2950 for a 168 ballistic silver tip . re-19 in his, varget in mine.

Like most of the shooters here I've got a battery of hunting rifles. Most are semi or full custom builds. And, most tend to have quality (heavy) synthetic stocks, fairly rigid barrels and moderate-to-large scopes. All coming in at weights that don't lend themselves to carrying around too much. My varmint rigs are all very heavy.

Recently I got the yearning for an ultra lightweight rifle that would be used for deer, bear, elk or any future hunting that would require difficult or lengthy walking.
I was considering something in 280/284/308 class cartridge and a bare rifle around 5lbs or so. Left Hand, of course.

Oddly enough I tripped onto a LH ULA 28 in 300WSM. Reportedly to be a safe queen that was rarely shot and never in the field. That is a rather unusual rifle to find, especially in 99% condition. At $2,700 I'm just wondering if I should compromise on what I had originally envisioned or to take a chance on the WSM.

Decisions, decisions, decisions. :D

One important factor is finding out magazine length. The model 24 action is same length as Rem short action and magazine length is 3.400", model 20 has magazine length 3.000" and the model 28 for WSM betting that magazine 2.900" max if that.

I contacted a dealer for Forbes Rifles Inc and was told that production of SS left hand rifles should begin in the "first quarter".
Hopefully, a factory new rifle will be available in a chambering of my choice. Quality may be an issue based on what I've read.
Give me a Mountain Accent in LH and I'm done. LOL

I have a Kimber 300 WSM which Mr. Forbes of the old ULA designed the stock for, It does not kick as bad as my wood stock 270 Win. with 180 gr. hunting loads. I have a friend who has up to 338 WM in ULA rifles and loves them. Mr. Forbes is a great stock designer. I still kick myself, 25 years ago I found a used ULA rifle in 25-06 for sale at the old Mountaineer Sport Shop. I wish I had bought it, Took it across the river there in Morgantown and had Mr. Forbes screw a 280 AI barrel on it. Had a great light rifle years ago to carried hunting.

I've got a Mod 70 Winchester feather weight in 300 win short mag.Compared to the Rugar 77 in .300 win mag, the SHORT Mag, is more like a good solid slap to the shoulder. I can shoot the .300 win mag 15 or so times with pretty warm hand loads no problem. The mod 70 feather weight, not so many. That said, i'm about embark on a new ''journey'' i just bought a Remington 721 re chambered from a 300H&H to a .300 Wheatherby magnum. Its a old, but, very neat, beautiful classic rifle, there is quite the history behind it. I'm looking forward to using, and shooting it.

I have a NULA 28 short in .300WSM, no muzzle brake. It has a stiff well designed stock with a high straight comb. The recoil impulse is quick and not uncomfortable for me. I would compare it to a typical weight 30-06. I do have a 2 lb scope on it which may help! (;
