For sure. If it hits bone at an angle you won't get the classic performance. At least you recovered the game. Head shots can be iffy

I am a Accubond fan. I personally shot over 30 animals, wild hogs and whitetail deer. I only recovered one bullet, 7mm 140 grain 95% retained weight. All others were complete pass throughs under 300 yards. The first shots were head and shoulder shots on the big boar hogs and the bullets performed great. Dead animals.
A head shot on an elk is some pretty hard bone. I'm surprised it wasn't a complete pass through. Still, a very good bullet.

Agreed! I've lost count on how many animals I've taken with accubonds.. way more than 30 if I count hogs... they're extremely accurate and deadly IMO.. never lost an animal.. but I don't shoot them in a 270.. but I think the angle in which the bullet hit the skull had a lot to do with it...

Look's like it did its job. At least it was not a thin jacketed bullet that came apart on impact leaving an Elk with a bald spot on his head running through the woods. This is why I have made the switch to bounded bullets for hunting in my fast hard shooting rifels.

My son shot a cow elk at 350 yards with a 6.5 creedmoor and accubond. 2 bullets expanded on the humorous and scapula. Both failed to penetrate into the chest cavity. Finally recovered the animal the next day with a 270. I have a bad taste in my mouth for both the creedmoor and the accubond but I do realize both are from one experience. My daughter had a similar experience wiih creedmoor and eld-x. That bullet entered 1 lung and the follow up shot imbedded into the spine. I was just hoping for better penetration on both. Tough if a broadside shot can't make it through the spine or both lungs at 350 yards. I will be using more mass in the future. 300 win mag and at least 180 grain bullet.

My Wife hunts with a 6.5x55 and a 6.5CM, both using a 140 Nos. Part. within 100 fps of each other. She has shot 2 young bull Elk, in both case the bullet penetrated both shoulders and exited, also with good terminal performance. She has done the same with several Deer but she shot one AR Whitetail that was not big at all, angling from back of the ribs to the offside shoulder and the bullet did not exit at all. I have no idea why but I do know strange things happen.
Concerning the .270 Accubond, I used that bullet on 10-12 head of Big Game with really good results but I will confess I did not shoot a Elk in the skull, or an Elk at all with that bullet. I believe it is a very good bullet.
I hope some day we have a bullet that expands at all useful velocities, Penetrates the same every time, with a good BC and very accurate, EVERY TIME. I don't know if we are there, I see new stuff like the TLR and wonder & I am thankful that the bullet companies keep trying!

You said a 6.5x55 and 6.5cm both put a 140gr partition completely thru both shoulders on an elk and exited? What speed are you running those? Just curious as rarely do 300mags and sometimes not even 338s go all the way thru an elk via both shoulders. How young a bull elk? Yearlings or 2 1/2 yr olds?

Give the Federal Trophy bonded tip or the Federal TLR a try, I have shot Elk and deer with them with very good results . Two things you need to know if you are reloading them are that you start low on powder charge as you should on monolithic bullets , monolithic bullets normally produce more pressure , the second thing is strip the barrel clean before shooting and I would run 10-15 rounds through the barrel to season it as they are plated . It took my custom 30-06 10-12 rounds to settle in and then shoot the 165 TBT at 1/4 -3/8" 5 shot groups and the 175gr. TLR tries to shoot in same hole around 1/8-3/16" . These two loads were Federal loaded ammo , just my results . Have not started reloading these two bullets yet but I recovered the 175 TLR under off side hide from Elk shot close 250 + yds and weighed 147 grains . You might also talk to Mr. Steve about his Hammer bullets , I will start testing his new Absolut Hammer as soon as he produces them in 30 caliber . Good luck . F.K.

Sounds about right for the Accubonds, need twice as many bullets to get something dead!! The 140 AB didn't impress me all that much.

In this case 2, but my brother in law has this weird habit of sneaking close so I chose a bullet for him that I suited how he hunted, instead he shoots the elk over 400yards away lol, made a good shot though

I think it could be an issue of marginal stability not keeping the bullet point on at impact. A bit of yaw and instant bone.

A 243 WILL KILL ANY ELK DRT 90% OF THE TIME.....

THATS WHY A PREFER A 225 + GRAIN MONO @2950 IN 30CAL OR 338CAL!!!

IT WORKS AT ANY ANGLE 99% OF THE TIME AT ANY ANGLE!!!!

That's why some people call them the (6.5 needmoor) and yes I have one for long range target shooting but have better choices for elk.

Looks like at least 80% retention. That and a dead elk equal a successful shot to me.

AT 40 yds that bullet had to be angling up from the barrel do to the scope being about 1" to 1 1/2" above the barrel. The elks head is on an angle too. I kind of think they were lucky it didn't glances off the skull.

I have used that exact bullet out of my 270 on a number of animals, elk included. The performance has always been exactly what I would Have expected on recovered bullets perfectly mushroomed and either stopped u set the off side hide or penetrated completely. Personally I would never purposely shoot an animal in the head. There is just too much room for error and I have seen more than one animal with a blown off jaw. I respect the game I hunt more than that.
