NON-TYPICAL rifle build in mind; need some help...

I am currently swapping over from a 6.5 PRC to something with a bit more awesomeness. A 6.5 Sherman MAX.
Will run 20" carbon bbl suppressed.
I'd be interested in that. What numbers are you expecting? It would be a lot cheaper for me to stick with a 6.5mm. I won't need another suppressor that way. I can't find the 6.5 Sherman MAX on the website, got a link with info?

What's bullets and what speeds are you getting with a 19" barrel in 6.5PRC?
Chopped a 6.5-06 down to 18" and lost about 25-30 fps for each inch less than the original 24" barrel. My 18" 6.5x47 is about 150FPS slower than my 24" 6.5x47. So take your 24" velocity and subtract 30 fps per inch and you'll be darn close. Personally not worth the hassle of rechambering in my opinion but its worth what you paid me.

I've got an idea to build on a hot rod cartridge but cut the barrel down to 19 or 20 inches which will give me the barrel length I want but also slow my cartridge down as to not burn my barrel out so quickly. The key for me is to pick a cartridge either in the 6.5mm or 7mm family that usually screams with a standard 24 or 26 inch barrel and by cutting it down still achieves the same or better numbers than I'm getting with the PRC.
If you have better numbers than the PRC in a shorter barrel, well, it depends on what you mean by "not burn my barrel out so quickly." After you have it rechambered, cut down and seated, send it out to be salt-bath nitrided. You'll get more life out of it, but once it's toast, it's toast.
I don't Farcebook, but I'm surprised the bunny-hugging echo chamber/kangaroo court has not shut this down yet.... Maybe because you're not making Sherman wildcats for AR's?:D

I've compiled a list of calibers I'd be interested in for elk at longer ranges. All of this data is from what was mentioned on this thread as well as some PM's I received. Figured I'd share my findings and get some opinions.

I am thinking about starting a somewhat unorthadox build and need help from the experts out there. I'm currently hunting with a 6.5PRC which I love. I've have been shooting/hunting suppressed on/off with it and the only thing I don't like is the length of the barrel and suppressor together which on my current rifle is 31".

If I would cut the PRC down, I would have less energy and speed than a 6.5CM which isn't what I want. The big deal is I need to pick a caliber that will still have efficient powder burn with a shorter barrel. I'm thinking one of the short mags is going to get the nod, but I'm not completely sure. Any suggestions on caliber?
This isnt a bad idea at all! Check out my build of a 16.5" 6mm Creedmoor. It's an absolutely fantastic hunting rifle for walking around, in/out of vehicles, brush, and it holds its own from a bench as well. Short barrels are excellent.

People get hung up on absolute numbers and bench racing statistics as the scramble for every last yard of effective range. The reality is, in the ranges most people shoot game at (inside of 500yds), the extra 200-250fps doesnt make a meaningfull difference. My 6mm loses a little over 200fps over a 26" barrel, but it still carries 1000ft lbs of energy out to around 450-500yds depending on conditions. For what it does (and what 99.9% of people do) that's more than enough, and I have a rifle that even with a suppressor on it, is more compact than some AR15s.

I know several people who have explored 18-20" 6.5 PRC in a similar format to my 6 Creed. Since you already have that, why mess with something new?

I think a 284win would also make a really cool short hunting rifle. Basically any intermediate capacity cartridge with efficient case design is going to do awesome in a short barrel.
