I have an "older" Savage FCP-SR in .308 with a 24" barrel. I shoot the Sierra 168 grain match over 42.0 grains of IMR 4895 and it effortlessly prints 1/2 MOA groups at 300 yards. I used the same charge with a 165 grain Sierra Gameking and got the same result. I seated both of them .020 off the lands. I've never felt the need to load anything else in that rifle. It's just plain fun to shoot. The IMR 4895 is a bit dirty but produced very consistent results for me. That said, Varget is great stuff too.
One tip I would give you in addition to sling stud on the shooting bag pointer that xs10ns gave you above, is to get some Redfield Sight-In grid targets. Shooting at the orange dots was always hard for me, and I find it much easier to superimpose the cross hairs and "lock in" to the grid pattern of the target. Just my $.02
Good luck!
