I'm setting up a new Sendero II in 300RUM for elk. I am new to the long range game and am looking for advice. For elk, what scope would you recommend? I have a vari X III, 4.5x-14x-50mm with paralex adjustment on the bell that I am considering putting on (currently on another rifle that hasn't seen use in a while). If so, what adjustment knobs would you recommend from the Leupold custom shop? (standard adjustment now). Will this scope give me enough adjustment on this rifle? I would like to shoot as far as possible, but only experience and practice will dictate my maximum range. I am hoping for 500-600yds. Are there any advantages to the Mark 4 series? I have heard that nightforce are top shelf. Are there significant advantages over my vari X III for my intended uses to justify the upgrade? Your experience and recommendations are appreciated.
Thanks,
Erik

In my opinion, it depends on how much money you want to spend:)

the vxIII that you have has 67 MOA adjustment, plenty to get out past 800 yards and even to 1000.

I bet that VXIII will treat you well. I would put it on the gun and start shooting it. I believe it will work just fine. I just picked up another 4.5-14x40 long range and a 6.5-20x40 long range for $525 each which I though was a fairly good price. Thats another option.

I have been putting USO glass on my rifles for quite a while. They now have smaller scopes availaible with lower profile objectives and eye pieces.. It is about as tough as you can buy plus the glass is world class and I use the MOA reticles..

Considering that you already have the scope and it is a fine scope for what you want to do, I would invest the money saved in a quality spotting scope or binoculars.

I am not sure what you mean by it having standard adjustment knobs. These have changed over the years and could be anything. If it has the coin slot knobs then a set of Stoney Brooks will work just great.

Thanks for the replies gentlemen. Buffalobob, this scope has the coin slot adjustments. I have e-mailed the leupold custom shop and am waiting for a reply as to what they can do. I will go ahead and mount this scope, I like the glass, but sooner or later, I will have to replace it (from the rifle where it was). I'm hoping Leupold will be able to put some type of low profile target turrets on it. Thanks for the help.
