Looking to make some decisions on a rifle and reloading set up. Been hunting with hand me down rifles for years and I'm looking to get myself set up with a bolt gun, .260 Remington, 7mm-08, 6.5x55, etc...something like that.

I used to be pretty active at Palmyra Sportsmen, but I let my membership lapse when I joined the Marine Corps and started having kids (22 mo old and one on the way). I need to find a club to join that's less than 45 minutes away. New Holland has (had?) a 600 yard range.

I'd love to get into some long range matches, milsurp or otherwise.

Are you looking to use it for hunting only ? or is this going to be a match , paper puncher / groundhog / deer hunting rifle ? 6Br ? 308 ?
The 260 is a good choice from what I hear, I just dont have one of those. I went with the 243 and a 6.5x47. I wish I had a 6.5x284 I know its a barrel burner but those guns just shoot with excellent accuracy . Fast is fine but accuracy is final. Hope I didnt confuse you, good luck with your choice.

I'm looking for a deer rifle. I'd like to build a target/match gun later on, but right now, I'm really looking for a hunting rifle that's light enough to still hunt with.

am all about 6.5 X 55 Swede. My 100 year old Swedish Mauser shoots 1 moa with my hand loads and the barrel might be the original. That is quite the norm for these old Mausers. On paper the cartyridge is a ho-hum performer. On paper that is. In truth, it is known to function far beyond what could be expected. It is known as the European 30-06 due to its popularity. It is the "standard 300 meter competition calibre" and given that they invented the 7.62 X ???, aka 30 calibre or 308 NATO, that speaks tons.

I have personally shot a gallon jug at 450 yards with a Swede I had never fired prior and did that off of a rolled blanket set on the hood of a pickup. The owner's perfectly hand crafted loads did mos of the work. Did I mention it was open sights? The owner repeated my performance immediately after at 550 yards. The bullets didn't have enough energy to explode the water filled gallon jugs.

I also have 4 guns in 7.62 calibre. Just for the fun of it and to consider for a "Doomsday" gun, look into the Mosin Nagant. Rifle bullets that have 30-06 performance selling for $.17 each and a reasonably accurate rifle for $90....MN 91/30 model. But that is off topic.

The best long range rifle out there today seems to be the 6.5 X 284. Savage makes one. !000 yard target rifle.

I'm looking for a deer rifle. I'd like to build a target/match gun later on, but right now, I'm really looking for a hunting rifle that's light enough to still hunt with.

My first deer gun was a 35 cal Rem pump. 35 is considered the ultimate brush gun for deer.....by some... and perfect for Pa. Not much on long distance cause it's BC is rather poor. Under 200 yards it is a real stopper and accurate enuff. It's history makes an interesting read as does the 6.5 Swede. You can spend the better part of a day looking at those two alone.

The top calibers I'm looking at right now are .243, .260, 6.5x55, and 7mm-08. I'm really hunting for a .260 as I intend to get into match shooting at some point and since it's a very good deer road and match chambering, it'd save me on some reloading gear. The 6.5x55 is another good round for both match and hunting, but there are more brass options for .260 Remington, especially match grade, from what I'm seeing online at vendors and reading.
