New Elk Terminating Toy

So, The older I get and the wiser I decided to build a lighter, shorter and quieter rifle to carry. Hopefully this one will finish out my hunting days maybe except a barrel. Pretty slick I think. Starting pressure testing and breaking in barrel tomorrow. Gonna shoot 215 hybrids in it. 300 Win Mag 22" proof 9.4" twist. Anti X action, Trigger Tech special, Trash Panda Suppressor, HS Precision bottom metal and AG stock, NX8 4-32 to top it off. 10.6 pounds total as shown. What do y'all think?

really nice rig

Small update before work caught up to me. So I was shooting some powder charges in .3 gr increments looking for pressure.
I started at 0.040" off lands cause I have another 300 wm and it liked it there and it was kinda in the middle and knowing I would probably end up working in 0.010" increments from the lands anyways.

22" Proof w/ 5 port brake
H1000
F215M
ADG New Brass
215 Hyrbrids

So H1000.....
75.0 2757 2751 2749 2758. Cleaned after each shot to get started
75.5 2779
75.8 2775
76.1 2793
76.4 2796
76.7 2802
77.0 2811
77.3 2813
77.6 2834
77.9 2854
78.2 2855
78.5 2893
78.8 2874 Primers starting to flatten more
79.1 2875 Primers same as above
79.4 2890 First sign of slight ejector mark. Stopped here.

Something that puzzled me doing this pressure testing is the pattern of the bullets were all over. Like 6" all over at 200 yards. This is the first rifle I have that did this to this extreme. Most stay within 3" at that distance and some half that.

So towards the end of the ladder I really think that 2850' is where it is wanting to be right now until it speeds up. I think the shorter barrel is not burning up all the powder currently hence the erratic number swings towards the end and why pressure was so long showing up.

So I cleaned it.....sent 3 fowlers down the tube.

I then loaded up 4 @ 78.0 0.040" off. 2866, 2871, 2870, 2869. Not bad looking at it huh. What you don't see because rain caught me was this 4 shots with an ES of 5 was a 6" group at 200 yards. Spread all over and around the target. I checked the mounts, barrel contact and even the brake. All tight and snug.

So I'm bummed cause I'm leaving for a trip tomorrow morning and will not be back until Monday and it's going to bother me all weekend. I will probably do some seating depth testing when I return before trying other powders and see where it wants to be. And guys it's not me. I went in and grabbed my 28 nosler and shot 3 in .65" groups at 200 yards. So yes I even questioned my shooting form because it was such a short barrel. Ideas are welcome until I return Monday.

That is pretty strange. Even with no seating depth test, a rifle of this components shouldn't be printing groups like that. My assumption since you check everything could be an issue with one of the parts, rings or scope To be exact. I would pull scope and rings off and try a different scope and ring combo. If it tightens up you know it's one of the two. seeing as it's a nightforce my assumption would be rings.

My first custom came back, and I couldn't get anything better then 3-5" at 100 yards. Sent it back to the smith, the first load and depth they tried shot .3's. On return I swapped rings and I was shooting .4's with ease. Brand new rings, had a manufacturer defect in them.

That's the second time this week where I heard rings and bases made that much of a difference.

Where you shooting with the suppressor on? If so, I'd start with taking that off and shooting another group. So many possibilities... gotta check one variable at a time.

No suppressor on yet. I'll take the rings off and put a known good set of scope and rings on when I get back. Never had this happen before.

Wow that's nuts. Nightforce rings also. I really hope that is the issue that's the easiest solution.

Not something you can necessarily test or elimate as a variable, but my next thought is crown damage/issues. From a troubleshooting standpoint, you're on the right track with rings and scope.
