New Cartridge from Federal - 7mm Backcountry

I hope someone can get ahold of one of the cases and measure.

I just found something that makes me think it is "different"

Standard bolt face. I missed that before.

Back to work figuring out what "parent" cartridge is closest.

It's all for grins and giggles...

Using QuickDESIGN:

I took the 6.5 Weatherby RPM
Necked it to 7mm
Changed the case mate specific gravity to that of an alloy steel
Change the case wall thickness to what I think alloy steel would be
Changed the max PSI to 80k

Loaded that in and QuickLOAD:

With the Barns LRX 168
A load of Reloader 16
As close to 80k PSI
Long action standard COAL
24 inch barrel

and

The results were 3153fps. About as close to the promotional material as can be.

If this turns out to be the case, we know why Weatherby was the first to actually list a rifle offering specific to it.

Federal Ascent 155 and Reloader 26, no other changes 3300fps
Berger 195 Hunter Elite and IMR 78287 SSC, no other changes 3000

Recoil will be equal to any other cartridge producing the same velocity/energy with equal bullet weight. More pressure, more potential problems/danger. 25 percent more pressure, 6-7 percent velocity increase. Decreased barrel life. If a shooter wants magnum performance that come with all of the pitfalls then just get the appropriate cartridge to start with. If there is an advantage to this new cartridge it would possibly be case material. If rifle and action as well as barrel and stock and maybe even scope providers will stand behind there products with the added pressure that this case material claims contain, then there is a real product here for some.

I repeated the above experiment with a 280 based case.

It took a bit more modification from the parent 30-06 but it works too.

As the Outdoor Life article points out, those dimensions will make it very hard to reach 3300fps with a 155 Ascent at 80k PSI with user available powders. I don't have a QuickLOAD model for Superformance. Anybody?

Agree, the news is the case that can handle 15k more pressure. If not a bid deal to reload it could change much. I am not talking about the cartridge but the case. Lots of ideas are not originated by who makes it successful.

Already having "what if" ideas of various .472 head cases in various calibers: A 30-06 that performs like a 300WM, a 25-06 like a 257Wby, 270W like a 270WSM or Wby, etc, etc.

Already having "what if" ideas of various .472 head cases in various calibers: A 30-06 that performs like a 300WM, a 25-06 like a 257Wby, 270W like a 270WSM or Wby, etc, etc.

Are powders going to change to accommodate. When 88gr and 90gr 22cal bullets came out look how many of us quickly ordered 7T and 8T barrels. Look how range finders changed Long Range Hunting.

Like so many times before, demand will drive change and improvements. "IF" enough people want something, somebody will produce it. Remember when Hornady's new Superformance rifle loads were using a non-canister "special" powder we could not purchase, but eventually, it became available?

If this new case alloy works and is not overly expensive, what is to stop Federal from producing all types of rifle loads using it and upping pressures and velocities in several old .472 head rifles/cartridges? Or anything else for that matter. The jury is out.

I found the cartridge dimensions.

It looks like a 280ai with a 30 degree shoulder instead of 40 with shorter neck from the different shoulder angle.
