I'm going to have a 280ai built soon. I have a stainless 700 action on its way. But now I need to pick a stock. This is my first build so I'm not all too familiar with how to decide on everything.

I want a good hunting rifle. Nothing light, nothing super heavy. Somewhere in the 8-8.5lbs. 24" #4-5 fluted barrel. 700 action. Modest scope in the 4.5-14 power range.

I'm not sure on the stock though. Is there somewhere I should be able to go and pick them up and see how they feel? I would like a composite stock. But they all feel so different.

Any suggestions or advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Try Stockys and look them over.

tell us a bit more about the role the rifle will play. do you want a dedicated longrange rig like this...

Or a rifle that can be used as a carry rifle with longrange capabilities...

The stock on my nephew's rifle came from Boyd's https://www.boydsgunstocks.com/. You can find similar stocks at Stocky's https://www.stockysstocks.com/

The stock on the 260 is a McMillan. You can find composite and laminate stocks like it on Boyd's and Stocky's as well.

Thanks. I have looked around a good bit. Just hard to make a decision off of pictures. Would like to find a place where I could physically hold them. I found one place that has hs precision stocks. Would like to find some others as well to try.

More like your nephews gun. A gun I can carry but is capable of .5" groups. Hunting/sporter style stock.

2things I'm concerned about is comb height and being able to have the rig fit me well. Also concerned with the feel of the stock. I don't want a thin cheek piece that cuts up on your face and a stock that feels like it should be on my sons BB gun.

Rifle you can carry is easy to build. Getting .5" groups can be much harder.

Given the laundry list of features and concerns you have, seems to be you'll be ordering and returning stocks until you find the one you want.

Thanks for the help. No doubt .5" groups are not something to take for granted that they can be gotten at the drop of a hat.

I really only have 2-3 concerns for the stock. Not much of a laundry list.

So is that what some do is order one to see if you like it. Then if not, return and buy another? Or do you just try and duplicate a stock that you all ready have?

I know some of the older browning stocks had a good feel to them. A little bit of a rubberized feel to the outside but was a composite stock not rubber like the hogue stocks

I'm not sure what others do, but I have certainly bought an item, toyed with it some, determined it didn't fit my need and returned it. Cost a few $$ for shipping but I just call that 'rent' on the item.

Thanks. I did find one shop that has a few hs precision stocks to look at. Plus they sell his precision and McMillan rifles. Might be a good start
